17 hmr

Thinking about a 17 hmr, got 22’s, 22 mag, 223, do I need one? Dunno, but you can’t have too many toys. Considering a Ruger Precision, something a bit different for me as I don’t have a chassis rifle. Anyone got experience with one of these? Or what others should I look at? Doesn’t have to be in a chassis either.

Tikka make a good HMR with upgradable T3x stock. good trigger and mag set up make it an easy unit to shoot concistently with.

I bought a 17 hmr before I started reloading. I can reload my 204 or 223 cheaper than I can buy 17hmr ammo for.

The thing I like a 17hmr is don’t have catch brass and it is like a 22 on steroids. You can just point and shot at rabbits out to 100metres or a bit further. Whereas with a 22 you’d have to allow for bullet drop.

I have a Ruger Precision in 22. It is the cheapest way to get a Rimfire in a chassis.

I’d probably buy Tikka or CZ 457. Normally I’d say CZ as I am a bit of a CZ fan

Ive only ever shot a Ruger Precsn 22lr once & didnt like it...to be fair, it was brand new & still tight, not set up very comfortably (scope heighjt & eye relief) & i only had probably half dozen shots with it...still--i wasnt overly impressed...

Ive had a few shots with a Tikka & love it ...!!...its someone elses & ive whacked a few bunnies with it & a couple of foxes...(although it does have a feeding & locking up issue & the guy has a shyte awful scope on it--its very dull with crappy resolution under spotlight & reticle on a cant makes it hard to hit consistantly with it out at 100---its like he cleaned it with a left over lamb chop... )...

He's done the trigger spring & overall I do like it--it would be majic to shoot with if it was set up properly.

Id consider a Tikka if i was in the market for one...

Id have to agree with your ruger evaluation Stix, they just seem on the cheap side with too much zipper noise. I had 1 of the first Rugers a few years ago when they were released and I got the less than keeper feeling despite being accurate.

Come full circle I rate the Tikka hummer but I now rate the Ruger 17 WSM even more  :drinks:

What's your experience with the .17wsm bill. I like the idea but I've heard reports of erratic accuracy????? I had an option to buy a cheap bmag thumbhole but wasn't sure weather to pull the trigger so to speak.

The 2nd most accurate rimfire I've ever owned, most accurate was a 1930s Mauser target rifle.

Early reports of 17wsm had it as average in accuracy but I suspect stiff triggers and poor rifle offerings.

My 17wsm will shoot 5 shot moa all day with an awful lot in the 0.5 to 0.6 range, ammo isn't expensive if you do your research and buy bulk. I sold my tikka hmr this month and will be selling my 218bee shortly cause the WSM is better deal allround.

B mag have magazine issues and I would highly recommend you steer clear, the only real option is the Ruger 77 but they ain't cheap.

The one and only .17 HMR I had was the lever rifle with a 9 shot rotary mag.I bought it new out the Ruger catalog and it was very accurate.About $700 was all it was and the scope it came with was good enough to do the job
