Marlin XT22 First Rifle?

Post by Elmo » 27 Feb 2014, 1:38 pm

Just put the paperwork in for my license today. While I'm waiting, I may as well search for my first. I originally had ~$2000 but the safe, carry case and paperwork reduced that to a mere $1,000 cash. I am wanting to bench rest target shoot at 25 & 50. 100 is out of my capabilities for now.

The local shop put me onto a Marlin XT22 and suggested mounting a 3-9x40 scope for that money as they had nothing used in stock. At $300 for the Marlin and another $300 for a Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield II.

I looked at a Brisbane range online and they stated a higher I should want a higher variable zoom and the next level up, in that shop, was a Burris 4.5-14x42 Fullfield E1.

That's a middle-high price range for the shop ($685) but it would suit my needs as a target shooter. There are 2 problems with that. I need a base and rings. I don't know what to get and what size rings to accommodate the scope.

When you order the gun and scope just get them to mount it and they will use the correct mounts.

To accommodate the scope you need to know the tube size which is probably 1" for both of those.

And scopes high enough for the front lens to clear the barrel. For 40mm or 42mm I think you'll find you need to "medium" rings if you get Leupold rings or something similar.

Like Muddy said though, just get the shop to do it when you pick up the stuff. 40mm is pretty standard objective lense size, they're sure to have what you need in stock.

If they don't have a set of rings in stock for a 1" tube, 40mm objective scope, they're the worst gun shop in the world

Of the options I'd go with the 4.5-14x42 too.

If you're doing bench shooting the extra zoom will be beneficial.

3-9x is more a hunting zoom range where you need field of view, not magnification.

They should fit it in store for you though, no fuss.

No we wouldn't :P

Seriously though Elmo just get them to fit it in store, then they can bore sight it for you at the time too and save you a little time when you're sighting in.
