.22 snap caps vs spent brass

Post by becks » 04 Mar 2014, 1:30 pm

Hi guys,

Dry-firing a rimfire is a no-no of course and they do .22 snap caps for this.

Are the caps any better than just rotating spent brass a couple of times and firing on the same casing a few times?

I have done this just 3 times and notice the rim of the brass is really getting out of shape, I don't want to cause any issues where it will get stuck or bend out into anything.

Should I get some proper plastic snap caps or am I worrying over nothing?

Thanks.

The idea of the Snap Cap in any rimfire is to stop the firing pin from hitting the hardened steel of the barrel and damaging the firing pin.

Same difference snap cap or spent case but I would not suggest you use the same spent case more than a couple of times or you might have a little trouble getting it to extract. It's just a buffer between two hardened pieces of steel.

I don't other than a few times testing say trigger pull ever see a reason for dry firing a rimfire when I do it's a spent case. They come pretty cheap.

Rotating a bit of brass is fine as long as you're hitting a 'fresh' area of the rim.

You'll get 3 dry-fire shots out of a spent casing no problem. Chuck it after that.

IMHO using a snap cap is a far safer option, no fun mistaking a live round a deadun'

Plus you get 15-20 shots out of a snap cap. Something like that anyway.

Less of a pain in the ass than only getting 3 for each brass rotation.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

The snap caps get chopped up as well.

Yep, they're only plastic. Nothing special that lets you use them forever.

Just saves you time swapping them round less than with spent brass.

You get 20 shots or whatever out of them like Hercl said, not 4 like with spent brass.
