17 HMR

Post by duddley75 » 01 Sep 2020, 12:36 pm

So I was looking through Used Guns site and came across a 17 HMR.

I really want to get into hunting and hopefully a bit of bunny busting. Do I have a property I can access at the moment, well no , but I would rather be prepared should the opportunity arise.

Already have a 308 I use for target but more suited for stationary/camped hunting for bigger stuff.

So for under $500 (Plus transfer costs) I can get a scope and Savage .17 HMR.

I originally was thinking a 243 for uniting, but will a 17 be more suitable for smaller stuff and 308 for larger?

I use a Sako 17HMR and to around 150m it is is brilliant ( provided there is little or no wind), but I do my bunny busting in the early am and late afternoon.
I think the Savage is a very underated firearm....but go carefully and check the item out before taking delivery (if you can of course). If you want a to just bust bunnies at around 250m + then maybe a 223 or similar.
The 17hmr ammo is a bit pricey so you would have to shop around and one thing I learnt very quickly was to put a decent bi pod on it and make every shot count. (goes without saying really)
Hope you get what your after.

The 17hmr is a great bunny busting gun. The only negative I see is the price of the Ammo compared to .22. But it kind of feels like you are using a .22 steroids. Makes shots around 80 to 100 metres much easier. With the .22 you need to start thinking bullet drop. With the 17hmr just point and shoot.

Nothing wrong with a 17, but I like the 22WMR. It's a nice cartridge and doesn't get blown around as much as the tiny little 17's, hits harder a bit further out as well.

I can shoot my 204 for the same cost as the 17 rimfire, and the 204 is twice as capable.

Would you be better off with a 222?

Wouldnt HMR result in bunny pink red mist? Im a bit self righteous and only terminate what I can eat, but im also looking at rimfire options.... HMR, WMR or 22, farked if I know which is better for Oz hunting. Can you reload HMR and WMR?

this is where i'm at . just sorted a nice accurate 40gn nosler load for my 222. it's flat shooting and very accurate . it's been hard to find light projectiles that shoot well in my 222 as it got rebarrelled in 1-12 twist . flat base projectiles are what works for me but most of what is available are boat tails

but i do like the idea of a rimfire with reach , and no reloading ;)

i'm looking for a excuse to buy another gun ....

17 hmr is great for rabits, hares and foxes i have taken larger game with a well placed headshot. I have moved up to a 17 reminton to give me a little more distace. But dispite what some people may tell you within 150 and small game they are a great round and hard to go past. I still have my hmr and have no plan to sell it.
