Fave 22 rifle

Post by Shootermick » 29 Dec 2020, 6:27 pm

We’ve all got at least one rifle in 22 lr, a lot of us probably have more than one. Hard to go past the trusty old 22.
So I was wondering, what is everyone’s all time favourite 22? Or the one they always wished they had?
I’ve had a few and still have a couple, and for me I love my Browning BL 22. But it’s hard to go past a bolt action too, mines a heavy barreled Savage, not a bad rifle, but for me not the stuff that favourites are made out of.

Mate I had two that I regretted selling, first was a little Miroku lever which was great for spotlighting bunnies, second was my BRNO Mod 2. Great bit of kit but foolishly let it go for way too cheap.
Had a Lithgow LA101 and now a CZ457 which is now my one and only so I’d say it must be my fav now.
If I had my pick though, my BRNO mod 2 would be my pick.

My very first 22 was a Stirling semi-auto. In hindsight it was a pretty average rifle but when you are 13 and there are possums and rabbits a plenty it did just fine. NZ obviously.

I only have one in the safe now, a Tikka T1x with a 16" barrel. Nothing "classic" about it but it's a tack driver and super easy to carry about.

As much as I love my Brno model 2 (in my opinion the best rabbit rifle around), my favourite has got to be my CZ 455 varmint. Seem to go through at least 100 rounds every time I take it to the range and always walk away smiling.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

I have four .22 rifles now, hard to call a favorite as it still changes between them but a plinking session will either be the Browning BL-22 lever with open sights or Savage A22R lever release with red dot, The Savage is more accurate, largely due to the sights but with short rounds the Browning can hold 22 in the tube, both are awesome fun.

For accurate shooting, metallic silhouette or targets at different ranges I have a Savage B22 FVSS bolt action with Boyds stock, heavy bull barrel and a basic Tasco 3-9x40 scope, it's slick smooth and a real tack driver if I do my part.

Finally, for accurate 50m ISSF competition target shooting with peep sights the only choice is my Walther KK500 bolt single shot which can put bullets through the same hole at 50m if the wind is low and the ammunition is good enough. Very heavy and specialized but pure pleasure to use, I only wish I could shoot to a fraction of its capability.

I’ve got the same model Savage. I got a gunsmith to cut the barrel back to 16”, heavy short barrel now.

I have many rimfires, mostly collectible Military Training rifles but also some sporting, ML22, Brno 2E, Lithgow 12 etc but my favourite is an 1896 Dutch Mannlicher carbine converted from 6.5x53 to 22RF by the Portuguese in 1947, and probably equal this 1937 Mauser KKW, Cheers,

Bloody hell, I was just thinking to myself that surely someone has an Anshutz. When I was a lad shooting silhouette, the mighty Anshutz was the go. Every second person had one.

had to wait a while for it but ive had a LA101 left handed 22 for a while now-it is a fantastic rifle , last bush trip I head shot a bunny at a measured 136M (rangefinder) , it shoots CCI Std, Velocitors and SK MAtch into tiny little groups-and being a lefty just makes it wonderful to cycle.

Well that's easy - it's my current CZ 452 Varmint. But it could be my brothers Browning Trombone which is a delightful bunny rifle, or the full-wood single-shot BSA "Cadet" rifle which has head shot hundreds of rabbits with its exquisite iron sights, or maybe the Gevarm semi-auto that Howard took away, or the single-shot Remington Model 44 my Dad still owns that I learned to shoot with, Or the old Lithgow single-shot like the one in the "Smiley Gets a Gun" film that an uncle owned. Or even another brothers CZ 455 American which is so much more practical than my Varmint, Or my nephews Ruger 77 Synthetic...how do you choose?

I have a marlin ss which i docked the barrel to 18, reworked the trigger to a nice crisp 1kg and filled the forend with fg resin and no8 shot.
Short, hefty and accurate.
It aint as pretty as my 1999 sako finnfire but its the rifle i always use when shooting for the pot.
The finnfire does see daylight twice a year lol but you could say the marlin is my fave.

I have a couple too many 22 rifles.
I used to have a brn model 2. 4 power scope. Could hit a ten cent piece at 100 meters.
Best 22 I owned. Loved it. Then someone decided they wanted it and stole it.

I also had a JW15A, it would shoot almost as well as my brn.
For fun, the lever gun in 22 is fun.

Almost a lifetime ago I had a Ruger 10/22. Now that was a fun gun. Didn’t find it to be too accurate.

My CZ 455 is my work horse these days. It gets the bulk of the work. I use Winchester 40gr powerpoints.

Tough choice for me. The humble 22 is my favorite calibre and I have a few. My favorite to look at would be my CZ 452 Farewell edition that is just a safe queen. My favorite bolt action would be my LA101 as it's made here and is a wonderful well made rifle. My current favorite to use though would be my new CZ 515 tactical, it is ugly but practical and a heap of fun to shoot.

I got like 8 22's. Like em all from little Winchester single shot, Anschutz that could hit a fly at 50 yards and of course a CZ but my favourite would be the Marlin 39A lever action.
Busted more bunnies than I can remember with that.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

I like my cz457 varmint, im in love with my bergara b14r in MPA chassis.

The cz will be the bunny/loaner gun, the bergara is going to be for range fun and PRS type competition, I went a little silly putting that thing together

Well favourite 22lr.
Would have been a Winchester 2a
Very short single shot 22 that you could carry around your rabbit trap line.
I thought it was legendary.
But then I grew up and had an early 1022 that after a lot of tweaking.....like three years would shoot a 10 cent piece at 100 yards most the time.
I found I hated the magazine the nail ripping cranky feeding thing and for spotlighting out the Ute widow it was a pain to empty the chamber to put it back in the passenger side foot well.
It got stolen so..
I bought a left hand Remington 581 bolt that I rotary hoed into the ground after it fell through my secure picking bag off the tractor.
After a barrel chop and such it still is my favourite after probably 40 yrs of use.
I’ve had more accurate and different actions. I had to replace the plastic magazine as it fell apart one day with a 10 shot one and it hangs down in the way a little for offhand shooting in one position . The5 shot mag was just right.

Bought a Brno 1 1950 and playing with it .
It is sorta nice but for a legend I thought the firing pin fit and finish would have been lots mo better.

Ooooh!
Then there’s that old Lithgow that was deadly accurate I borrowed once that just seemed to float to the rabbits eye and stay there.

The browning trombone was fun on running rabbits and hares.

But despite all definitely the shorty Remington as it’s been hacked away to fit me and I know it so well.
What ever you choose look after it and it should serve you well.

I only have one - a CZ452 - so that's my favourite but...I'd love to get my hands on a Browning Trombone - poetry in the form of a rifle. Or the BSA single shot cadet rifle that has shot more bunnies than I can count with its superb iron sights. Or the Remington model 41 single shot that my Dad taught me with. Or the Gevarm semi-auto that Johnny stole. If I was in the market today I'd be very tempted by a BL22

Now that is a thing of beauty, No1Mk3. Very impressed you have one, that is a rare beast! :o

I have the Chinese trainer 'knockoff', and tbh it is fantastically accurate. I pimped it out with a 1-4x20 scope to keep that 'Mauserish' look (also has a German #4 reticle). Plus I had the stock inletted to fit a WW2 K98 buttplate

I'm with you on the CZ 515, although I like to do a lot of buy/swap/sell to try out new (and old) rifles, and my CZ 455 bitsa is on the keeps list:) Put a lot of tweaks into that rifle and its still my go to for plinking and target... less so for hunting but i rarely get the chance these days.

My biggest regret however was selling my CZ 452 FS. That sale was a mistake:( It was such an accurate and stunning rifle!

Got an email from Pardini USA today. They are launching a single shot .22 target rifle. Pretty damn pricey though...anywhere between $3K and over $5K US.
Pardini make terrific target pistols and I was in the market for a .22 target, but .....not quite now.
