All state friendly 22lr bolt rifle

Post by BruceW » 26 Feb 2021, 1:23 pm

O.k prolly done to death and I’m have trouble interpreting all the rules and Regs for the different states regarding a 22lr bolt action rifle.

What would be the minimum barrel length and stock length o/a length for a rifle to comply to all states.

I know I have a short barrelled rifle which is over 750mm in Qld but can’t take it inter state.

I have another with a bulge in it that needs lopping off if that matters.

If one was going to purchase a 22lr for all states what would it have to meet.

I’m not saying I would /could travel with it to all states with me but the first thing would be to sort out a appropriate rifle.

Anyone read and write that good?
Thanks
Bruce

My understanding was that anything over 16 inches was compliant. Why don't you put a new barrel on it? Is the rifle not worth it?

Honestly I don't need much excuse to buy another gun.
But the one with the bulge probably still shoots well.
What is the gun with the short barrel?
How short exactly is it?

Failing that any bolt action, 5 shot and standard barrel will suffice.
Think Brno or Lithgow
One well placed shot is all it takes.

My shorty is a bolt action Remington 581 lefty with a 12" barrel.
Yes it is loud.
Pokes thought the Ute widow easily and doesn’t get caught up in the scrub.

It still shoots about 1/2 to 3/4" at 50 yards all day long with cci std.
35yrs ago it was a bit better till I lost it on the tractor and hoed it Into the ground.
Not my best day.
Hoed my coffee flask in the same day.
Dug it back up 6mths later with a big ding in it .. Bloody coffee was cold and all. :(

The Brno #1 I’m getting I would have to lobb 75mm off it to get past the bulge..
I think it would make 16-17".
No stock for it but could knock up something ugly.
Or maybe just pillar bed it into an old stock of some sort to see before wasting money.
See if it can be made to shoot.
May need a bit of love and a good lap out.

Check it out proper when the PTA comes through and I can pick it .

Think I’ll be good to go with a 5 shot mag .
The action and running gear seems to have had little use so could be a good host for a new barrel if needed.

Give me something to play with over the wet anyway.

Thanks.

G'day BruceW,
Shoot the Brno before taking the hacksaw to it, I have an old savage with a bulge about 12' down, it still shoots very well. I also have a 357 Mag with a bulge near the muzzle (6" barrel) and it also shoots well, Cheers.

Well just for an update.
I found a stock to mate it into and bedded the back action toe? Area just before the trigger set up and the sides and Knox form to about half way to the key way where the centre screw should be.
This gives me a screw roughly in the middle to tighten the action down on to with two point bedding with one screw.
It is just snugged into the stock.
I’m sure I could bend the action if one was ham fisted.
This gives me a free float.
Gave the barrel a good clean out and to my surprise it has only 4 bulges in the barrel.
Two near the chamber that could be missed and another about half way up.
The main big one is near the muzzle.

Any hoo with cci std it settled in
And seems to shoot on the perimeter of a sticky dot 20mm?
It will shoot of a few wild flyers now and then but also clusters, Stings, and half moons.
I suppose an inch at 50yrds seems and honest report so far with cci std but it will shoot clusters tight and stacking but it’s not there yet.
It could be the stock and trigger.
The stock seems to vibrate or transmit vibrations on firing which seems a little odd.
It could be because of my cheek bone on the stock maybe riding off it on ignition or the angle of the stock butt.
Seems very touchy on the bags but better if I snuggle into it firmly.
I think I will hack at the stock abit and see what happens.
I did touch up the crown but I may need to set it back as if feels it’s getting wider and the muzzle just before the rod pokes out.

I did try some of that more expensive Eley sport green pack stuff and it shot tighter and more a consistent clusters.
But keep the rest of my one packet for later trials.
The cci tends to feel a slightly better fit than the Eley in the chamber thou and is cheaper and don’t stink.
Don’t want to have to sell me dog for scientific experiments to feed the damn thing if it’s got champagne tastes.

Being so long since I have shot a rabbit in the head.
How big is my kill,zone?
I thought it was the size of a match box but you don’t see them around anymore either to measure anyway.
Ha.

I will play with the old girl and expend some more time and ammo and see if I can sort her out.
It does seems strange being right handed gun and the trigger and stock don’t feel the same as my other rifle I’ve fired for the last 30-40 years.
Who woulda thunk it?
Ha.
Thanks for the reply’s.
I would post a pitcher if I node how.

Pic of rifle.
Don’t know what the stock is from.
Maybe Chinese s/s
Or slug gun.

I don’t know what these marks are.
50 star year proof but the other one on the left?
Is it supposed to be crossed swords or some such?
Any way it is what it is.

Well I ended up lopping off the barrel to take out bulge near the muzzle out and the rocky gravely road left by letting it sit for 20 years in a cupboard to rust away.
This gives me clean/cleaner rifling at the muzzle.
Took it down the range today and it rained a bit and was a bit of shifty blowy wind but made progress.
It took some shooting before it settled in again and then I put a patch thou it.
Couldn’t get real consistency off the bench with bags at 50 yards.

Took out my old trusty Remington and shot a group with cci std from a clean cold bore.
Wow nothing wrong with the ammo then.

Remington

Proceeded to shoot holding on forearm with the Brno as I normally do and shot some groups again.

You would think the Remington shot better but the magic 5cent piece tells otherwise.

I did shoot some other different ammo too but the groups show 10 or 15shots with foulers just changing of ammo.
So it’s a bit unfair to judge them.
Have to get some more ammo now and try again.
All had tight clusters and outliners.
Only one group per ammo.
The cci blaser shocked me.
Pleased with the results.

Thanks for watching.
Maybe there is something to be said for these old Brno’s after all.
Makes you wonder what a good one would do.
Ha.

Bit of an update
Played with the bedding a little.
Chopped off a bit of wood so it is more left hand friendly and had another go.

A bit more consistent.

I used a home made paco style bump die. 0.225" which helped a bit more.

Ingnoring the flyer. Probably me.

Put a small tuner on and a quick dail in.

May have to refine the bump die some.
Still not bad.

Eley Edge only fired 10shots at 50 yards straight after shooting different ammo so it might even be better

Better than it was.
Do you think it would be good enough to for head shooting rabbits yet?
Thanks for watching
