Need help on a DoD Winchester 1906.
Hi
I was recently shown a Winchester 1906 pump action 22 with military markings to the stock.
I am hoping someone can provide a little insight as to why a 1906 would have military markings.
The markings are stamped D broadhead D with a 2 stamped under and 3801 stamped under that.
I am assuming the 2 means Military District 2 which I think is NSW.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

G'day LawranceA,
We were short of firearms for "official" purposes, so the Government asked people to give their rifles to them on the basis that they would be handed back after the war. These were used for a number of purposes including vermin control around stores depot, issue to remote homesteads near POW camps for self-defence (my, hasn't that attitude changed) as well as training purposes. I have a 1906 marked the same. Cheers.
