Floating barrel on Anschutz .22 necessary?

Post by pucker » 21 Apr 2014, 1:55 pm

Hi guys,

I've recently picked up an Anschutz 1416D with the heavy barrel and classic sporter stock.

It shoots great, but there is some contact with the barrel at the front end of the stock.

Is it worth removing this touching bit of stock for a 22?

I don't really want to go carving into the new rifle already if you know what I mean... Does a .22 have enough going on that it really needs to be floated?

As I said it shoots good, am I likely to get anything more out of it for floating a .22?

I have the Beavertail stock on mine, but otherwise it's the same as yours.

Mine also has a small contact point at the end. I never bothered to fix it, same reasons as you... Didn't want to scuff up my shiny new toy :D

No need to though in the end, mine is very accurate regardless of the stock contact point.

Definitely try a few boxes of ammo before you get stuck into your stock. Hopefully you'll find you don't need to as well.

This will interest you - 22LR ammo comparison

Short version of the story is, try some RWS Club ammo. It shoots the best in mine out of a dozen tried.

P.S. if you can find anywhere with RWS 50 and 100 ammo in stock I say give it a go. That's the only two types of ammo I'm yet to test in mine (that I wan't to) and they're a step up from the Club ammo so hopefully they're even better.

I wouldn't touch it as it would be shooting .5 MOA at 50 outta the box I would imagine?

If it ain't broke don't play with it.

A mate had a 2013 and it shot awesome, but as we all do he had to fiddle with it a shillion barrel new free floating stock and yep it now shoots like crap!

$2000 extra in the hole and it shoots worse, but thats my 2 cents worth.
I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Better even.

Mine pretty consistently shoots 10 shot groups under 0.4 MOA

My best 5 shot groups with it are under 0.15 MOA.

Edit: That's at 50m of course...

Thanks for the ammo recommendations Lorgar.

If I get anything like that accuracy I'll be stoked.

More shooter error than rifle holding me back at the moment though ;)
