CZ 455 Standard

Last year, I found this uncommon CZ 455 model going for $895 at Sunbury Firearms in Victoria, and requested some photos of it.

It looks suitable for scratching the open sight itch without being unusually long, or sacrificing too much sight radius like might be the case with a shorter rifle like the Scout model.

Sunbury Firearms quoted $75 for shipping to Sydney for a total cost of $970. That is close to the cost of a CZ 457 Synthetic or Tikka T1x MTR at dealers closer to home, but that doesn't include the cost of a scope and rings.

Does this look like a good deal?

Hi. If you want open sights the 457 has the much better rear sight. The 455 has a buckthorn sight which is good for fast target acquisition. I can vouch for the 457 being very nice to use. I've got 2 457 premiums in 22 and 22 mag and they are both absolute tack drivers. The trigger is excellent out of the box.

There’s a CZ 452 on used guns at the moment with a 28” barrel if that interests you. $1600 used though and in QLD.

I saw it yesterday. but I think the 28" barrel is much too long, and $1,600 is too expensive for me.

I thought about the CZ 457 Training rifle (similar to the Premium model) a while ago, but it seems like a damn long rifle, and the 24.8" barrel becomes redundant if I choose to mount a scope on it.

You'd have to compare the overall length. The reason i commented was to shed light on the quality of the sights not barrel length.

I recently drew up a spreadsheet on Google Sheets comparing the measurements of various rimfire rifles that I've seen at dealers and the used market. The CZ 455 Standard rifle has a total length of 98cm, while the CZ 457 Training rifle has a total length of 108.5cm. Here is the link to the spreadsheet if you're interested.

As for rear sights, I don't dispute that the one on the CZ 457 Training and Premium models is better. However, you are more likely to need to remove that large sight component to mount a scope. That said, while I would like the option of using open sights, I can overlook it if a particularly good bargain that doesn't have open sights comes up.
