I need a new.22

Post by Faedy » 22 May 2022, 11:19 pm

I already have 2 .22's.
One old ruger that is just a knock about work gun
One Cogswell and Harrison (CZ 455) that is my bunny buster.
I now want one for mainly social target use say to 100m, but I want it to be a tack hole gun.
Im left handed, but used r/h guns all my life, so will stick with it - just avoid montecarlo stocks.
Thinking
Sako
Anuchutz
Tikka
Lithgow

Happy to listen to seasoned advice.

Anschutz or Lithgow would be my recommendation. I saw a 1710 come up on used guns for a not too over the top $$ last week.

Anyone tried the Marlin XT-22R? Are they made in the USA?

Seems very reasonably priced.

Voodoo would be another good choice for the out of box target rifle potential.

Its not a tack driver per se but I bought a bog standard Henry H001 and put a 2MOA red dot on it and I love it. Most fun I have ever had shooting I reckon. I can shoot off hand, standing, kind-of-prone, off the bench etc and still make a neatish hole at 25 or 50.

My cheap arse Hatsan- Escort 22LR CZ clone is a tack driver and only cost a few hundred bucks. Not sure if u can buy them new anymore but I love it.

I hope you meant reasoned advice rather than seasoned.
If you want truly reliable "tack hole" accuracy then disregard any the run of the mill factory jobs you have mentioned and consider a used older smallbore target rifle such as Anshutz, Walther or Feinwerkbau.
You should be able to find one of these for perhaps $1000 to $1500.

I agree - If you want something for a bit of casual BR & general range work, the older Euro single shot target/match rifles take some beating if you can find one that hasn't been abused. The Anschutz & Walther pictured below have a combined age of 79 years. They have triggers the equal of just about anything available to-day and are still Vudoo accurate with proven lot numbers of ammo.

Can't go wrong with an older Anschutz 54 or Walther. accurate enough to head shoot a fly at 50m.
Wouldn't want to carry one around for long though
One well placed shot is all it takes.

Anyone got any recommendations for a 22LR lever action rifle?

Also, for NSW Cat A/B license holders - can someone confirm if there is a limit to the number of rounds the tubular magazine can take?

Browning BL22 is pretty hard to beat, I love my Henry’s, but the BL22 with the short throw lever is a better gun in my opinion.
No idea about the NSW mag limit rules though, but a lot of lever action 22’s will hold 15 rounds of 22lr.

Henry H001 is not bad.
Norinco JW21 is pretty good, and cheaper than an original Winchester 9422.
I saw Rossi does one as well, looks very similar to the Henry.

Don't think there is any restriction on a fixed magazine, only detachable mags.
Make up a bunch of 15rd dump tubes and you can keep it running very quickly.

Thanks for the info here, the Browning BL22 looks good to me.

Also appreciate your input on this. Norinco is a Chinese manufacturer yeah? Out of personal preference I do usually try avoid Chinese products, happy to pay more from elsewhere but will look it up anyway.

This was a decent article by the SSAA reviewing the lever action 22s: https://www.ssaa.org.au/officialreviews/official-reviews-22-lever-action.html
