PCP recommendation’s

Post by Nath__111 » 06 May 2025, 11:39 pm

Hi Guys, I’m look at getting a PCP air rifle and have had my eye on the FX. The two I was looking at was the:

- Fx DRS Tactical ( which I have spoken to a few dealers and have been advised that it is not going to be released in N.S.W. ) Please correct me if I’m wrong.

and the

- Fx Dreamline classic.

The caliber I’m going for will be .177 as the gun will be used for birds, rats and the occasional rabbit.
- I have a decent break barrel .177 but I am just after something that’s groups better and the main thing is, that it does it consistently ( which my break barrel does not,
it’s a stoeger rx20). The other reason is the quick follow up shots that you can do with a pcp while holding on target.

My big question is what everyone’s thoughts are on the fx dreamline for what I’m after. I have checked the specs on it the gun and am happy with everything including the tank size and having to refill it with a pump / dive tank.

The other question is from the price point is there another PCP that is a contender or I should be looking at to the dreamline for my needs. I don’t want to go any higher in price and you can get the dreamline for $1500 in the synthetic stock version.

As always any help is always greatly appreciated.
Cheers guys.

I have the impact in .25 cal and a mate has dreamline in .25 cal.
Both good guns but I prefer the impact.
I've nailed dozens of rabbits with it and 1 fox.

Another highly modified FX Impact here in .25 cal. 44gr slugs @ 1080fps, taken lots of rabbits and hares and a couple of foxes. Love it

I have a dreamline tactical and it's pretty good. At their price point there's not much around that compares. My suggestions would be:

Step up to .22 calibre for your intended pest usage
Get a barrel band. The whole "barrel" is somewhat flexible, especially under field/ rough conditions.
Index the barrel liner.
Fit 20 to 30 moa scope mounts.

If you want there's power plenum, carbon shrouds carbon sleeves, power kits, blah blah blah..... A lot of this stuff is cool but "may" only make you feel nice, as opposed to shooting any better.

Dreamlines come up used occasionally for reasonable prices with a lot of the extras already fitted. Lite and tactical models are much more user friendly if you want to "tune" it. I've played around a bit with mine if there's anything particular you need to ask but out the box it was very good with jsb pellets.

I would also go a .22 in a PCP as it's a very versatile tool where a .177 is just for the birds.
Both would still punch holes in the shed walls, I would imagine.

Use the .177 for close-range birds and rats.
Use the .22 PCP on everything else.
It's a fair investment to step up to a PCP and all the filling stuff.
It could be hard to sell a .117 set-up if you wanted to move it on, lots are going .25 cal now.
Now that cheap shoebox compressors are available, I wouldn't even buy a SCUBA tank.
I also set up a small carbon bottle so I can leave the shoebox at home but get a few gun fills in the field.

Thanks heaps guys really appreciate all the advice and help.

After listening to your advice and researching a fair bit I will definitely go the .22 cal minimum but now the .25 cal is on my mind. I noticed in the dreamline the .25 gives you a slightly bigger tank and my thoughts were, I could always use the lighter pellets in the gun for birds and rabbits and if I ever need to I can step right up to the heavier grain pellets for larger animals like foxes if the need ever arises.

If I do end up going to the .25 cal is the only negatives to choosing this caliber over the .22 that I will be paying a bit more for ammo and have slightly less shots in the magazine or is the other things that I need to consider.

Also I totally agree with the barrel band as it does look prone to damage in the field and do they make a barrel band that is equipped with a bipod attachment. I am hopeful that I can attach a bipod to this gun but doesn’t mean I won’t buy it if I can’t.

Thanks heaps guys.
