.22lr target rifle

Post by Skippyk1 » 28 Dec 2014, 9:38 pm

I am looking to get a .22lr for target shooting. I am not sure what kind off shooting I will be doing. I am looking at about $1500 for the gun itself. I have an idea off going with an Anschutz 64S BR 22LR Rifle. Thanks for any help or ideas in advance.

If you want a new Anschutz you might have to wait.
It took over 6 months to get my 64 MPR :(
But I got exactly what I wanted :D not just something that was on the shelf.
So I've got no one to blame but myself :mrgreen:

I can't speak highly enough of my Anschütz 1416D (heavy barrel).

Anschütz 1416D range report

Below budget too, I think it was $1300?

Almost bought one myself but they didn't have one in stock so I thought if I have to wait why not get the little extras?

For that kind of money I think you'll only end up with an Anschutz. 1416 D HB, 64 MP R, model 64 SB R, one of those.

CZ 452 with a bull barrel is an option... Any of the above is probably better though.
CZ 550 American Safari Magnum in .416 Rigby

Other puny calibre rifles... What man would want you now?

I guess a more significant question, mainly for fun? or are you interested in semi/serious competition?
It might be a good idea to check out the ranges/clubs in your area first.
You'll get just as many opinions and sugestions from them as from here, but their the people you'll be shooting with. :geek:

Well my BRNO Model 2 has always done the trick, but for your price point you really can't go wrong with what the other fellas are saying: CZ or Anschütz. All my mates shoot CZ 22's and have nothing but praise for them, and my BRNO still shoots amazing.

But if you're into shooting at a competition level obviously your selection changes, and whether you want a rifle set up for "just" targets or whether you want a good all-rounder.

Browning A-Bolt Composite Stalker 22-250 w/ Nikon Monarch 3 MC3 4-16x42
BRNO Model 2 22LR w/ Iron Sights (Currently)

BRNO are a great rifle for the money.

Not serious competition stuff, but not everyone's after that.

Ain't it the truth :!:

Something for you to consider SkippyK1

Look closely at the specs and think about what you want.

I'll give you the reason I went for the 64 MPR

I would have liked a 54 action but too expensive, In reality a 64 was probably going to be better than me anyway so it's now about Barrel, Stock and Trigger.
Trigger;
Both BR an MP have the 5098 two stage match trigger.
That’s what I wanted but be warned they are VERY light.

Stock;
The BR is a purpose designed Bench rest stock great to put into a rest but not good to hold in your hand.
The MP is Multi Purpose the fore end is flat enough to sit in a rest but is also comfortable to hold if you want to shoot prone or standing.

Barrel;
The BR is 66cm but the stock is shorter so overall length is 98cm
The MP is 65cm overall is 110cm

The thing most people miss is the odd muzzle diameter 23mm on the MP.

Why? Because the muzzle has a dovetail for target peep sights!

The receiver is standard 11mm dovetail so can take either front peep or scope.

I ended up putting a scope on mine but if I find a set of peeps at the right price I’ll get them.

See if you can cop a feel of a BR or MP you might be surprised at just how heavy it is.

If you want an all rounder the 1416D a SAKO, BRNO or CZ all fit the bill.

Good luck with what ever you get.

anthillinside,

I seem to remember a review of the 64 BR that said the BR wasn't legal for the class it is aimed at, something about too heavy or forend too wide or something :unknown:

Chronos, I think your probably right about something there :thumbsup:

Probably reinforces my first comment about going and talking to clubs.

If you wan't to compette then you have to fit in with the rules.

The Bench rest rules have been evolving a bit, so I don't know about now.

The MPR was definatley over weight for SSAA 3P discipline years ago, now ??

ISSF have the international rules, Target Rifle Aus adapts from them.

You could normally find something to compette in if you wanted.

Me, I don't care any more :crazy: I just like pulling a trigger :mrgreen:

I forget the limit, but now that you've said it that sounds right.

At the time I bought my 1416D HB I looked it up and the final setup was just under the limit. By less than 100 grams I think from memory.

The 64BR is 300 grams heavier than my 1416D so that would be over.

(hope that's right, going from fuzzy memory here)
