Newbee Looking for Advice on new .22LR rifle

Post by mburns » 19 Jan 2015, 7:17 pm

Hi All,

I've seen many posts like this, over the web, but none have given me the answers i need!.I have trawled the internet and get contradicting/scaterred info, hoping putting my specific question down my get me some good advice!

Looking for a new target rifle, .22LR, happy to spend up to $2,000 (scope included), this will be my first rifle, however I tend to want to buy the best even when getting started on new hobbies.
Seems the target variants of the anschutz are just out of reach...I'm just not sure what comes next just under the anschutz for quality...

Just looking for advice on the "best" rifle i could buy specifically for targets at this price point!

Any help would be great!

For $2k you'll get a excellent setup, no worries.

.22LR doesn't need a crazy scope, $500-$600 is plenty leaving you a lot for the rifle.

Can't go past an Anschutz.

Anschutz 1416D heavy barrel with the beavertail stock is about $1,300, or one up the Anschutz 64 MPR is $1,500.

64 MPR with a $500 scope will be very competitive.

It's a .22. a very light and slow caliber. Don't expect center fire performance.
Browning BL-22 lever action...open sights
T3 Varmint .204 Ruger...Meopta Meostar 4-16X44
T3 Lite .30-06 Sprg...Aimpoint Hunter 1X red dot

....that will do me

Thanks for the quick reply, the 1416D did catch my eye, however I read somewhere that it was not a good choice for pure target as it is a "sport" rifle ?

Stuff the Anschutz, if I had $2000 i'd go SAKO.

It depends on what sort of target shooting you are after but for general SSAA type matches I've often thought about it and the SAKO finnfire is undeniably a better rifle if it comes down to a comparison with the 1416.

However the MPR is more suited than either as a target rifle and probably worth that little bit extra, you wouldn't be disappointed. There are two kicking around the club at the moment and the only handicap they experience is the person pulling the trigger.

I have used them all and they are all decent rifles.

But you know what?

There are several different versions, including sporter and benchrest setups.

1416D KL = Hunting rifle. Sporter stock and profile barrel. This is likely the version the person who told you this had seen.

1416D HB = Heavy barrel, sporter stock.

1416D HB Beavertail = Heavy barrel and BR stock. This is the one you'd be looking at for dedicated BR.

Here's how mine shoots ;) Anschütz 1416D range report

Wouldn't be a bad option. They're about $1,600 for the quad off the top of my head so still scrape in with enough cash for a decent scope too.

You couldn't get one new for that money, but a second hand heavy barrel 1712 could be an option too. If one's going, and the right price, that's a few ifs.

64 MPR would be great anyway so maybe forget it

What did you end up buying Mr Burns?

When I started out I was eyeing the Anschutz 1416 but went with a crappy Zastava CZ99. That crappy rifle ended up being a little champion at $460 scoped. Shoots better than I can and will do so for a while yet. I still lust after an Anschuts (match 54 now), however, each time I go out with my crappy 99 it knocks some sense in to me and I feel ashamed about my unfaithful thoughts...

Just remember to check the second hand adds, you'll find the really good stuff might come down to fit your budget.

Remington's Custom Shop offers their 547, you might check it out.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Rifles are a bit like new cars... Lose 20% of their value as soon as you've driven out the door.

Find someone who decided they didn't like shooting after a few boxes and it's a good deal

sorry for late reply...I havent ended up getting anything yet!
Our lovely licensing and acquisition system is taking up my time. I (finally) got my license last week and immediately put in 2 PTAs. Now I get the joy of waiting another 30 odd days whilst that cooling off period counts down.

Pretty much decided on 64 MPR , going to shop today to see if they will order it in if I don't yet have a valid PTA, looking at proberly putting a Leupold EFR scope on it (blows my budget a little but oh well!).

64MPR, nice.

I'm sure they'll order if you put a deposit down.
