17 HMR or 22 Mag For Shooting Paper

Post by PaWNTANK » 02 Feb 2015, 7:58 am

Howdy Guys,

I'm in the market for a 17 HMR or 22 mag for plinking, shooting paper at 0-100m and just general fun.
Some of you may see my sticky and say "But PaWNTANK, you've got the Marlin for that"
indeed I do, but almost every time I go shooting I bring along a non shooter and try to convert them :)
And since it would be kinda cruel to start them on a 30-06 shooting 220gr bullets I always give them the Marlin.
I am looking at the below models, if anyone has experience with any I would love to hear their thoughts.

Savage MkII in 17HMR
ISSC SPA in 17HMR
Ruger American Rimfire in 22Mag
CZ452 Special in 17HMR
Ruger 77/22 in 22Mag
Browning T-Bolt in 17HMR

Or if anyone has any recommendations let me know, just keep the price below $1100 :)

CZ452 in the 17. Fast flat and accurate

I'd get either the CZ or T-bolt.

Why not a .223 (CZ carbine?) that you reload for... that way cheap(er) ammo whilst still low recoil and good flexibility

I have or correction the wife has the cz 452 in .17 and it's a nice rifle but they are a little expensive to run compared to a CF you can reload IMHO
I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Thanks Guys, useful info as always from this forum and its members.

If it is around the same price or cheaper to run a .223 rather than a .17 or .22 WMR then a CZ 527 is definitely high on the shopping list. Along with a Tikka. Everyone seems to love them, I'm sure with good reason. If I can restrain myself from buying a rifle for another few months I will easily have enough for either one and some decent glass. Or I could keep saving and saving till I can afford a 98B or DTA SRS :)
Although that goes a bit beyond the original intention to buy a fun little plinking rifle.
When it comes time to hand the Marlin to my younger brother, it will most likely get replaced with a CZ in .22lr.

I know it's not what you asked but maybe something to consider: my Savage MkII loves CCI's Velocitors, which are running a 40gr bullet at about 1430fps, not too far behind 22mag n a lot heavier projectile than 17. Plus cheap to run n you don't need a new gun. Just another option!

Although if you're like me any excuse is a good excuse for a new gun haha!

Yeah the Savage will be added to my collection when I get a new bigger safe. There are a lot of .22's I want to add to my collection. All in good time.

Got to say if you're thinking target shooting out to 100m Id stick to .22lr.

Cheap to feed, accurate at 100m and you'll learn a lot because you have to think about the wind and you can afford to shoot it more

Plus you'll be able to shoot registered target competitions like rimfire metallic silhouette, hunter class benchrest etc.

I know you asked for opinions between the 17HMR and the .22mag but imho they are both hunting rounds, not target rounds so you most likely won't be able to buy match quality ammo that's built for accuracy where as you can buy match grade .22LR ammo starting at $11/50 rounds

Thanks Chronos, I will be foregoing the .17 HMR and 22mag and getting a CZ 527 or Tikka T3 in .223 which I will reload for. (Leaning towards the Tikka)
Then after that I will be giving my .22lr Marlin away so it will get replaced with a CZ or Savage.
Then after THAT I am selling the Remington 700 to a friend so it will be replaced with a another CF rifle. Just gotta decide on a cal and start looking at different models.
The 1887 is also going to a new home, I will be getting an o/u to take it's place.
Although that is several months away so I will worry about that when I get to it.

There's a lot of things I like about the .17 HMR but the cost isn't one of them for punching paper.
