New Rimfire - Anschutz 1416 DHB or Cz 455 thumbhole

Post by AusTac » 14 Jun 2015, 8:13 pm

Having a hard time choosing between a few models of rimfire rifles in .22lr the short list is

Anschutz 1416 DHB said to be picky on ammo and pricey

Cz 455 thumbhole varmint or manners affordable and generally a solid rifle

lithgow la101.. haven't heard much lately, a friend has said they eject pretty poorly

sako quad pricey but looks alright and has a nice mag

Savage btvs thumbhole stainless

I've been down to the LGS and had a feel of all of them and so far the Cz is at the top

If anyone owns any of these fine firearms and has any advice/experiences to share it would be much appreciated

Cheers

Have you thought about a lever action? I recently got a Browning BL-22, holds 15 rounds and you can cycle the action as quick as a semi-auto. Accurate and a fun rifle to shoot.
Browning BL-22 lever action...open sights
T3 Varmint .204 Ruger...Meopta Meostar 4-16X44
T3 Lite .30-06 Sprg...Aimpoint Hunter 1X red dot

....that will do me

My 1416 DHB has ejection issues. There's a fix, but I've just been putting up with it:

In hindsight, it would've been cheaper/funner to start out with a composite Browning...

Whats the intended purpose for this rifle? For target shooting it would have to be the Anschutz or the Sako Quad. For hunting or general plinking any of the others will do fine and comes down to budget and how they feel. I have a PWS Summit T3 for target and recently bought my son a Henry lever action (he's a lefty) which is a nice little rifle.
How's my posting?

Intresting to hear that about the lithgow stefo how do you find it i accuracy, it ticks all the boxes for me apart from a varmint barrel but isn't it medium weight?

And its just going to be a jack of all trades at the moment nothing inparticular

I have a Lithgow Crossover and have had zero issues with the functioning and ejecting with close to 20 different varieties of ammo. They are very well made.
There were some bedding problems with early production models but the factory assures me they have fixed these now. The trigger is not adjustable and it's not the best but there is an aftermarket spring kit which helps.

I also have a rifle that you haven't listed, which is the Weihrauch HW66.
Price wise they are the same as the Lithgow and a couple of hundred less than the Anschutz.
They are made in Germany and quality is right up there with the Anschutz. It has a walnut stock and the action is smooth with a solid feel. It has a match type trigger which is superb.

The German made rifles like Anschutz and Weihrauch have tight chambers which are great for accuracy but makes them fussy with the ammo. The general rule is stick to European ammo from RWS and SK and you'll be fine.
The regular ammo from CCI etc generally works ok but some don't so you have a try it.
eg. My Weihrauch cannot use the Winchester power point 42gr as they wont chamber. If you do manage to chamber one and fire it won't extract.
I tried some Eley subs and they were tight fit too.

Anschutz aren't cheap, but they're top quality.

And you won't find anyone with one that doesn't shoot well ;)

I've never had any problems with mine.

Well, a couple that didn't eject but that's going to happen in anything. If I put through 100 rounds in a session I might have to flick out 2-3?

I've got to say i'm pretty keen on the lithgow now hearing those good words about it from fellow shooters and not some random magazine article. Seems to be a reasonable price also.

Im pretty set on a synthetic stock but for a annie i could see past that

The Weihrauch looks quiet nice though too bit pricey i found through some googling though thanks for the pictures

Got a lithgow crossover. I got one of the early ones with the bedding problem. Sent it back and they sorted it out with no dramas. been extremely happy with it.

Was quite impressed with the Ruger American too for the price. Much better than the savage in that ~500 price range.

I put a 100 through it yesterday and had to flick less than a dozen. I wouldn't say it's a big issue.

I have on order the crossover in LH configuration and the wife has the Ruger American compact on order. Both in.22lr.

Looking at the trigger spring upgrade for the Lithgow.

I am happy with the selection. Not looking for target rifles.. Just waiting for the pta's

Not sure which one I am more excited for lol

Ruger is a package with scope from horsely park, came with scope, ammo, cleaning kit and Spotlight and the Lithgow is getting a Burris e1 3-9x40 scope. I have a bipod on the way too.

Naah trigger/sear spring, heaps of people hate the heavy trigger ( i haven't fired one ) and since its non user adjustable lithgow bandaided it with a factory installed spring.

There was a article on the web site a little while ago where lithgow arms were whingeing about people modifying their crossover triggers.

And apparently they are now available in a black finish and some teething issues are sorted so i might get one if i can find it

I have a CZ 455 American, great little rifle.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

I have the CZ455 with the 3 barrels, they feel solid and very well made. accuracy wise, the rifle is fantastic, I'm rubbish.

The only regret I have with the CZ is that I wished that I have gotten the CZ452 with synthetic stock and stainless barrel.
