Remington 597 .22WMR vs Savage A17 .17HMR

G'day fellas I was just wondering what your opinions on which of these semi automatic rifleswould be better for pest control out to 200m or so:
Remington 597 .22wmr
Savage A17 .17hmr
I've had a bit of a problem with feral cats lately and I want to eradicate the little pr!cks and I've been using the .223/204 and it just seems like over kill so I've been using the little .22 but the buggers always seem to be just out of range. The rifle would also be used for foxes and rabbits .
Any input would be appreciated , thanks :D

For flat point blank shooting and accuracy, the 17hmr. Need a clear shot, though; they don't handle debris like grass and leaves very well. Still think it will be the better out further.

Yeah I have heard the .17 struggles a but in the brush but it's nit too much of a worry for me as my farm is mostly open pastures with the occasional tree belt

200m is too far for the .22WMR

A more practical maximum range is 125m - 150m. Beyond that the drop starts to increase dramatically and make compensating more difficult, along with dwindling accuracy and power making it unreliable at 200m.

With a 100m zero, drop is about 2" or so at 125m and about 5" at 150m. Drop at 200m is something closer to 20 inches depending on the projie :?

Add wind, shooter error and the rest....

.17HMR for what you want. IMHO.

What's a little over kill between friends?

Personally I'd just stick with the .204.

Ammo is more than the rimfire of course but by the time you've bought a new rifle would it be worth it :unknown:

Dunno if it's just me but with the 17HMR coming along the 22MAG seems like a bit of a dud now.

Not cheap like the 22LR.

Goes a little bit further than the 22LR but not as far as the 17HMR

It's like the worst of both cartridges?

I know the 22MAG came before the 17HMR but you know what I mean....

The 17hmr seems to have a definite limit to the game size it can handle. I think foxes are at that size limit.

With that said I know a guy who is a bit of an idiot and he shot a fallow doe with his .17hmr and dropped it on the spot with a heart shot. But that's illegal so I certainly wouldn't recommend it

Yeah. Heard similar stories.

Speaking to a mate on the weekend and he swapped his 17hmr for another 22lr. Said a certain local game species didn't respond well to the 17 and he had never had the problem before with a 22lr so he is going back.

Personally, i'd use a 22cal centerfire in that situation, and do on a regular basis. Just passing on second hand experience.

Maybe i should say "reliably handle" in relation to the game size limit of the 17hmr.
