cheers for the thought, that's one ive thought about, but the .308 is marked generally as more accurate than the 30-06 and with only 90-150fps faster generally, im happy with my 08 unless you can give me some food for thought as to why.

I know its a hard question as application comes into play, what do I need it for etc. i dunno, fun, hunting, just cos its awesome, appreciate everyones thoughts ta

It depends on what you want to shoot.

If free range duck is appealing then a shotty.

Probably something between 22lr and .308 like a 223 or 22-250.

I would ditch the air rifle and use something like CCI quiet 22 ammo for the really low power stuff.

The .30-06 has been around for over a hundred years. Its good out to 1000 meters and always has been. It's got a bit more kick than a .308 and that why people complain. It's a classic caliber and deadly.

Since you already have a 308 and possibly reloading for it, why not get yourself a 300 Win Mag? Nice popular cartridge and it'll let you reach out and smack things just that little bit further :) Or buy a 50 BMG and gain 6" in height and 4" longer where it counts..worked for me.

A guy I know around here lost his bang sticks for a very minor incident of neighbour rage. So he now has a compound bow and says he's taken more deer than beforehand and silently.

thanks, yer im considering an in betweener, what brand and why if you've got thoughts on it.

As for the air rifle, NO WAY! i already run subbies through the LR and its nice and quiet for that, but the air rifle is a whole other thing. Right shot placement, even on the .177 is deadly for small game, and quieter than my .22, and if anything happens to .22 ammo, making pellets to fit would be very easy.

push away mate, i know the feeling and i welcome it lol.

i don't know much about the calibre of the 30/30, what's it good for, accuracy, size of game, price and availability of ammo? (if you know, or can be bothered posting)

the shotty id take straight up....but   when will i see the Atler 28" 12g lever action  So im waiting...and hoping..

.30-30, bugger all recoil, easy to get ammo, very good for close in work....they are a winner....but I prefer more grunt. The .30-30 will take deer.

Do you reload? If not, simple answer would be based on ammo price, a .223 and buy a bulk case of ammo cheap. Keep the brass and sell it in batches of 50 or 100 to recover ~60% of the ammo cost.

As for brand...that's a personal choice. Go and pick up a bunch of rifles in gun shops and see what you like. Depends what you want to spend.

To be quite honest, your questions are like asking how long's a piece of string.

ok, i know a little about some stuff and have no clue about lots, so bear with me please.

ive thought about the 300 win mag and has a good boot too, i recently shot a mates 450 nitro express with his reloads, boy that was fun! So apart from the distance what else is good reason for the 300 win mag? (aside of just wanting one and its awesome lol).

how much is a 50BMG?

We digressed into the fact that it doesn't take much to lose your hobby. In fact, get a good enough lying complaint about your personality or any behaviour and you might even end up in court fighting to be seen as innocent when there was no evidence for the complaint.

Full package with scope and mounts you're getting up around $15k before ammo which will set you back another $12 a round or $6.50 to reload. These are totally impracticable to own and shoot but the grin factor is worth it.

An idea on budget might help with suggestions, I shoot a dozen different calibres and each one is enjoyable in it's own way. I'm just as happy shooting the air rifle as I am the big stuff.

yep, you jogged the memory, i knew it was a serious price tag...but probably worth it lol. As for the various calibres, im the same, they all take a place of purpose and i enjoy them all.

thanks for your thoughts Brett much appreciated mate.

no mate, were not bashing the police here, nor talking about breaking the law, your missing the point, i gave one example of a scenario where your gear can be taken when your innocent and within the law. Just saying...anyways weve digressed again, more thoughts on another gun, cheers

12g all the way.....
every shooter needs at bare minimum 1 each of;
22LR rimfire (cheap plinking fun)
303Brit (preferably Aussie made yeah KW!)
12g for not so cheap but still lots of fun plinking and very effective on everything from bunnies to birds up to whatever you care to shoot at reasonable range
then add your 8x57, a few mags, 300,338winmag, a 375, a 45cal mag, maybe some smaller stuff for the girls like a 243 or 223.....
to start you off..!!

that's where it sits on the list with my currently, but you know how a visit to the gun shop ends up sometimes lol.

I want the new Adler lever action, and willing to wait and hope and pray, that's why im currently considering another gun to supress my emotional state of not being able to access the Adler lol.

i like the circuit judge, but my choice of calibre would be the .44, i don't think they sell them anymore though.

Forgot the 30/30 or 45/70, you just gotta have at least one lever action :D

Strangely enough even with my assortment of rifles I'm missing the 303, 8x57, 338WinMag, 45 Mag, 243 & 223from the above list....Bugger, better get some PTA's in :)

If you're eanting a rifle while waiting for the adler, i would humbly suggest 223. Cheap ammo, accurate enough, would slot into your current collection nicely.

Strongly suggest a .22-250 rem

Post by KWhorenet » 10 Jul 2015, 12:55 am

Actually, I change my suggestion.

Strongly suggest a .22-250 rem since you like something with a bit of poke and a boom to match. Fits in between your .22lr and .308 for sure.
A bit more entertaining than the .223 rem.
Suggest getting a Tikka M55 or M595, (not a new Tikka model T3) with a heap of once fired brass thrown in as a package deal. Oh wait, I may just have a couple of options available ! ;)
