Ruger 77/17

Anyone have experience with the Ruger 77 chambered in 17 Hornet? Thinking to buy one with the specific purpose of fox shooting, was originally looking to buy a 17 Remington. Seems the 17 Remington is difficult to find new and near impossible to find factory ammo for. I can buy Hornady 17 Hornet 20Gr factory ammo easy enough which is a good sign. By all reports they have the same trajectory as a .223 shooting 55gr but the recoil of a 22Mag which would make it perfect for the young fella when he gets a bit older.

A number of years back I got to shoot a friends 77/22, in 22LR. Nice gun overall but the trigger could have been better but I hear that Ruger has addressed that complaint. I have a 22 Hornet, a Sako I love, and as I read the 17 Hornet is based on the 22 K Hornet and that there ain't nothing wrong with that baby.

So from word of mouth and letters of articles it would seem that the Ruger 77/17 would be good choice.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

My mates kid just bought a Ruger American Rifle Blued package in 22-250 for $785 which is an awesome price. I haven't shot it yet but I dry fired it a few times last night and was impressed with the trigger, no creep and broke nice and crisp. Think I'll grab the 17 Hornet and see how it goes and report back here in a couple weeks with my findings. Thanks for the input GLS_1956, much appreciated :)

I have the ruger American. I would definitely reccomend it. It isn't a collectors item, but as a tool it has been very very good. I really really like the action and the trigger, the only fault with it is the ejection port is too tight to top load, but that's a minor niggle overall. But... very reliable, very light, very smooth and being synthetic, I'm not worried about dings and scratches, and I've found the stock quite good for a light synthetic. Oh, I know it's not for everyone, but I also quite like the rotary mags.
Also worth noting that Rugers are safe to dry fire.

The 17 Hornet is a very efficient round like the 17 Ackley Hornet both dynamite on foxes out to 200y. If you get into reloading for it cheap to run.

Would like to have a gander at the 17 hornet i have a 17hmr but it is a rimfire and thats great the 17 hornet has a great deal more punch behind it so i think would be great to have one in the safe. And the Ruger 77 not a bad gun have heard that the teiggers are a little average but all in all a great gun

I too run a 17 Hornet but in a CZ. It is a wonderful little cartridge. Had a Ruger in the past, synthetic stock in 223. I loved the action on the Ruger as it is solid and I like the fact that you can take the bolt apart in the field with a small bit of fencing wire. It has got me out of trouble on at least two occasions. Putting them both together would be a great combination. I have a KHornet as well but the little 17 is already the first choice as a walk around rifle here in Tas.

The Scout trigger I remember was very ordinary. The M77's at the same time was a lot better.
