Anyone use .22lr for foxes?

Post by Gun-nut » 03 Dec 2016, 12:49 am

I just bought a ruger american rim-fire in .22lr the other day and my original purpose is for plinking and hunting some rabbits, but I've been wondering if .22lr is a suitable round for hunting foxes at distances no greater than 50m. Does anyone hunt foxes with a .22lr, or is there a law here in Oz that prohibits this that i don't know about? Thanks in advance for your replies. :)

Some may argue that it isn't enough for foxes, but farmers have been using them for ever and a day. Keep it to within reasonable range and put it in the right spot and it'll be fine.

I doubt I ever took a fox with a .22LR, but I certainly have with .22WMR.
If a .22LR was all I had then I'd use it, but I much prefer a centrefire.

Within 50 I have had no dramas using the 22 LR. Put it in the head or a good chest shot and they are toast. 22LR are like any other rifle; within range limits and good shot placement are the key.
Go get em!

All the time. Shot hundreds with the 22LR. There is no law against it. Chest, neck or head shots recommended.

Shoot them between the eyes or in the ear area and they drop no worries, shoot them anywhere else and they can be a bit hit and miss with a 22 - I much prefer to shoot them with a centrefire myself.

Using a 22LR with H.v. H.P. ammo is OK, providing good shot placement and range is around 50 meters. I've shot heaps using a 22lr and a tin fox whistle combo AND then along came the 22 hornet, magic!

Shot plenty that chanced along using CCI subsonics. They still drop. Some might run a few meters but chest/neck/head shot works. Fox comes in range I'll shoot it no matter what the rifle in hand at the time is.

Shot one the other day that had been hammering the chickens. Young dog fox, a bit stupid, saw him and started whistling. Ran straight up to me! Shot him in the chest at around 20m. His mate wasn't hat stupid and hung back a little.

All depends on range.

I think the majority of people agree 50m is the max range.

People do say 75 or sometimes even 100m though.

Personally I'm more inclined to lean towards the 50m limit but people will think what they will...

I've had a few run off with 80 mtr shots. So use 223 now unless their under 50
