Will I regret buying a 22LR

Post by gherx » 06 Dec 2013, 8:11 am

Heya,

I'm looking at a rimfire rifle for some plinking fun.

Normally I would go to Little River Shooting Range to shoot but it's more than an hour away from me.

My local SSAA range at Springvale which is only 10 minutes away, but you can only shoot 22LR there.

So, my question is...

I'm torn between buying a 17HMR for further range/power but that would keep be driving for ages, or buying a 22LR which I'd be doing basically just so I can go to the local range.

Just seems like I'm getting a little less gun for the same money, so I can shoot closer?

What do you think, will I regret buying a 22LR?

It doesn't sound like you actually need the 17HMR for anything?

If it means a range is only 10 minutes away, I'm sure you'll get toooones of use out of it :D

never go wrong with a good 22. If you want the best of both worlds go for a CZ455 combo and get the 17HMR bbl / 22LR package

Yep.

Ammo cost alone is reason enough to get one :)

Hours of fun for peanuts worth of ammunition.

Nope.

I bought a 22LR for exactly the reason you outlined.

Access to the local range without a huge drive.

Buy something a little different and not follow the sheep. Go for the novelty factor but useable.

Oh yeah not to mention that a .22 is the only rifle you will own capable of hunting ( besides a air gun ) that you can hapily say that you havnt given the barrel a clean for 1000 rounds, and be happy about it.

EVERY collection should have at least one .22 rifle. Fun, cheap and a great trainer for when you want to introduce the sport to others.

Out to 100 mtrs max, or as close as I can call them in. I only use Winchester Power point.

I strongly urge you to consider something else. There are a lot of better rimfires about.

Get a cz or quad & have the best of both worlds.

Good idea.

CZ ZKM455 Special 22LR with 17HMR barrel kit is about $850, same price as Browning single barrel only.

Single quads are only $100-$150 more than a varmint stainless laminated t-bolt & twice the rifle. Buy the second barrel separately or buy it as a two barrel package. I've done something similar, I've sold both my t-bolts as they were rubbish. I've bought a varmint barrel quad in 17hmr for the tidy some of $1400 clean. I really wanted a .22mag so I will just wait until I see one on used guns or something. If you really don't spend that much the cz is a great multi barrel rimfire

Thanks again guys.

I've still been shopping but my stores are out of quite a bit of stuff now and no restock until new year obviously :(

CZ is definitely on the list, will have to wait until the new year to pick something up now though.
