Should be fine. Some use a 22lr for those at 50 mts.

TBO I think for dogs 50yards is the limit. 8o yards for foxes. Buy a 222 or 223

Easily do it. I've shot goats with mine before. I'd rather something bigger. I used to shoot a lot of foxes with mine to sell, easily kill them past 100m. Don't know about dogs, never hunted them. The new v max style bullets are quite good. Almost put it into 17hmr class. In short, within 100m,it will easily do what you want

I actually would use it a bit further than 50 even on dogs, shot placement is the key

I have a .22 magnum and can attest with 30 grain vmax pills it will drop a roo with a headshot. Ithink it will make short work of a fox. With dogs I suspect it depends on the size of the dog.

If fox and especially dogs if your game I'd second Oldbloke's suggestion of a .223.

Then then you can do them both at 200m all day long and never have to worry about it.

Still basically no recoil, and not expensive to shoot.

I know im coming in a bit late here & ultimately giving you the same answer as others...but...

I have shot more foxes out to say 60 odd yds with .22lr using sub hp's, than with all other rounds & ranges put together.

One shot to the brain & their legs collapse under them in an instant without a twitch...you will however get a trickle of blood...

So the hornet will, without a doubt do what you want it to do...

Ah hang on...i just remembered...no it wont.!!!
You'd best send it to me...!!!

hey A3, as other guys have said, shot placement would be key. i have been playing with 22 mag lately, try as many different types as possible to see what shoots well. the barrel on my riffle has just started to settle down and shoots win 45 gr powerpoints for 1 inch at hundred. v-max 30gr spread a bit for me. lots of yanks use 22mag federal 50 grain hp on coyotes and bobcats, should be ok with shot placement at 50. but a lot of guys on this forum have said how smart feral dogs can be but. having more reach and punch with 223 as old bloke suggests is good advice. better to be over gunned than under gunned. and stix is still trying for a 22 hornet rifle !

Yeah having been buff hunting myself, a 270 for buff definitely too small. Min of 338 WM or 375 H&H. The experienced guide had a 416 Rigby as backup and in his view even a 458 lott can even be undergunned, especially if buff is already onto you...and cranky

.22 Mag will do the job just fine up to 100m - see my latest post in the Hunt Reports thread.
IF you didn't already have the 22Mag and were looking at getting one for foxes, I'd recommend going a .223 for the additional range.
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

Yeah No experience here but 270 sounds light on for buff. Having said that I believe 1000s were shot with 303s over the years.

In the end it's just a guide.

Yeah ob ya right about it being a guide

I'd take a shot at a buff with a .270 (depending on bullet weight) just not at anywhere near 200!

My father-in-law shot everything with his Remington 510 single-shot .22, although as his eyesight started failing he got a semi-auto 12-gauge, but it still took at least three shots to kill a fox.
During the war when ammo was rationed, and bloody hard to get, he'd go out with a single round to bring home a rabbit for the pot, very successfully.
