Any 22LR Rifle that can break in two?

Post by sports » 15 Jan 2018, 7:48 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking to fit a rifle in to as small a hard case as possible to carry on a motorbike. Is anyone aware of a good quality 22 that breaks in to two parts?

Thanks for your help.

Single with room in the stock to store a few extras. The only reason I don't have one is because I got the Chiappa X-Caliber already and didn't want another pack style rifle. I think there's still the conversion kit that turns them into a light weight fishing rod....not sure what category license you need for a rod / rimfire combo though :D

What about something like a Lithgow model 12 or 55. Stock undoes with a finger tightened nut and get 5 inches lopped of the barrel. Cheap as chips and easy to assemble and will feel like a real gun, unlike the survival rifles. With a shortened barrel will nearly be half/ half split.

Marlin 39A, lever action .22 that has a takedown screw through the action. Breaks down to about 25" due to 24" barrel. They will take a scope no worries. Good accurate rifle with an 18 round mag.
Chiappa do a copy, although I can't speak for the quality or accuracy. I've seen some of there other lever guns that have "issues".

Geez, thanks very much for the great responses everyone!

I'd actually looked at the Chiappa Shotgun / 22 option as seen here:

https://www.chiappafirearms.com/p.php?id=213

Brett1868 is that the same one you have? Happy with it?

I'll have a look at all the options given, again thanks heaps guys. I'm not fussed if it's a single shot or not, it really won't get much use but nice to have with me. On longer rides it's not really an option to carry any fresh meat so it would be great to ping a rabbit here and there. Also to be honest, sometimes when you are camping on your own, in the absolute middle of nowhere, it would make me sleep a little easier having a rifle with me :)

That looks AWESOME, but as usual we get screwed here in Oz. $533AUD on the manufacturers website, $895AUD locally :(

Good option, and can use standard optics too which is a bonus. I'll get some measurements, I'd really like to keep the case around 500mm if possible otherwise it's going to hang a long way off either side.

Thanks Wombat. I can't find any details on their disassembly, are they basic design where you can just remove the barrel or more involved to get them apart?

That looks like a great option, and I'm a huge sucker for a lever action! I've got a Winchester lever action 30-30 that my dad gave me when I was a kid, man I LOVE that gun. So far this is my favourite option due to sentimental reasons :)

A single captive screw and they take down like the Marlins.Takes about five seconds. Pump action, tube magazine and reasonably accurate.

Such a pity we can't have semi 22lr. I used to have a marlin papoose which was a great option for what you want. Sadly not an option any more

My apologies sports, I f*cked up with the dimensions on the 39A. Have a look at the photos below.

As you can see, 24" barrel + 3" of action, not exactly compact but still a good option. ( IMHO )

Mine is 550mm long but quite compact.
Shoots quite well despite the atrocious sights.

Thanks very much for taking to time with the photos, I really appreciate it. That's a fine looking gun, a little longer than I would like, but if I could find a gun case that is a perfect matching size it may be do-able.

Yep, that's definitely an option. First shot with the 22, if I miss I have a second chance, but may be dodging a little more lead over dinner :)
