It's Time for a .22

Ok, the minister of finance has gifted me $600.00 :o
For this grand sum I am looking for a .22 package.
This pee shooter will be used for both bench top range work and carried around on hunts

Rifle - preferably wood stock, not fussed about barrel (talk me into something)
Scope - 3-9x40/50, 2.5-10x40/50, 4-12x40/50

If I could score a bag and Bi-pod that would be cool too.

Remember I shoot left handed but I am naturally right handed, so thumb clearance is something I need to be aware of.

Please advise me coz I want to get it in the next few weeks so I am up to speed with it for the forum range day in Feb.

$600 TOTAL
I think this is a great number considering we just survived Christmas :P

If I could get more I would but I am so thankful that I have this much to play with.

Hmm, that's going to take some shoe horning to get it in under $600.

How about...

Rifle:
Marlin XT 22 Blued/Wood sporter $360.
or
Savage MK-II G, same Blued/Wood is $430.

Scope:
Nikko Stirling Gameking 3-9x40 $120
or
Nikko Stirling Nighteater 3-9x42 $200

Depending on which way you go, puts you right on $600 for the more expensive option. or leaves you $120 on the cheaper option for a bag/pod?

Cutting it close, but...

I'm coming around to the Ruger Hawkeye's.

Not quite the same, but a Ruger American in 22LR? About $450 for the rifle.

I'm a big Savage fan. You'll see in my signature I've got two.

The Savage Mark II comes in timber/blued, camo or synthetic all for $430 - $490 depending on which model you end up going with.

A Zastava might be your only other option other than those listed above.

Zastava CZ99 .22 LR is about $500 I think?

I could do that, but as she worked in the finance sector for 20 yrs I think she may just cotton on to my devious ways.
I am happy to try it, but when she finds out the truth she would go ballistic and it is at that point I would have to point her in your direction.

Savage varmint, comes with mounts & 3-9 bushnell. Around the $470-$550 mark depending were you shop . I wouldn't recommend any $600 rifle to be to good for comps though.

Sounds like a plan.

Buy the more expensive one then point her at Lorgar. Problem solved :D

That's a pretty solid deal.

Yer I put it on for deer culling. It puts 10 42g power points under an inch at 50m. Not bad for a $500 hunting rifle. Scope is average at best.

I bit the bullet and went for a Norinco JW21 Lever action and an Outdoor Optics 3-9x40 scope. :)
It may not be the best stuff in the world but I am happy.
The thought behind the lever action is that I will be using it off hand most of the time and cycling a bolt action with the wrong hand just does not work well for me. I will pick it up next week (Finances just didn't stretch this week).

Buy what you can afford, no point taking out a loan just for a rifle. If your happy with it who cares. Don't forget photos or it didn't happen.

Cool Lorgar,
SWMBO says it will be 3-4 weeks before pick up, however she will get so feed up with me whinging and whining that she will relent and I will get it real soon.

Nice ;)

Now we just need the friggen range to open again

I'm a bit pissed... I got my week wrong and got all prepped for the range this week.

Had my ammo box packed and printed and mounted a tonne of targets, all good to go.

Then realised I had the week wrong and had to unpack it all

Ah the joys of sighting in.

I remember when I got my first rifle I could have sworn something was wrong with the scope, I just couldn't get it on target.

Turns out I was just s**t and didn't know what I was doing
