The high end PCP's run at 200Bar, ( that's around 3000psi ) I don't think you'll find a compressor at Bunnings that'll do that.
A scuba tank is usually used for filling the cylinder on the rifle although there are hand-pumps available that will get you there. ( you won't need to visit the gym afterwards ) The scuba tank has to be "in test" and you get them filled at dive shops.
Most pre-charge guns will shoot 40-50 shots between fills and the better quality ones have an air delivery system that provides an exact amount of air every time , that, combined with high quality barrels and the best triggers that can be found is what makes them extremely accurate. Expect to pay 3-4 grand for one of these though.
The amount of noise they generate is as varied as the number of guns available. I've shot beside PCP's that you needed hearing protection for and others, ( like my own Feinwerkbau P70 ), are very quiet. My rifle was the 20j model and would take out pest birds at 100m, so noise does not always equate to power.

I had a brief look last night and i could buy a Sako for the cost of a decent PCP!!!
What sort of range do they have in 22 or 30cal?
When you say they are noisy, what would you compare it to? A 22lr with subs? Unsilencrd compound bow?

Yes, PCP rifles can be filled off a normal compressor but only if you have a booster downline such as the Shoebox compressor which will bring the pressure up to 300bar if needed but a cheaper option is the Chinese made air rifle specific compressor now available for around the $5-600 mark, as for noise, before I detuned my 22cal air rifle it was possibly noisier than a rimfire and you definitely know when my 25cal has gone off but I can live with it as this rifle consistently shoots 3/4moa groups at 100yds and gets 80 odd shots before falling off the regulator
