Buying a used 22lr for a friend. Only have 350 max.Need help

Post by Ricohard » 05 May 2018, 10:16 am

Im buying a used 22lr for a friend (who has a gun license). I want it to be a ripper of a 22 and want it to be scoped. Only problem is only got $350 max.

What brands do i stick clear of? Stirling and Norinco/Puma rifles keep popping up for abit cheaper. Heard they arent that good. Is that true?

Seen a few Krico, Lithgow, and Sportco's around the mark. Whats the verdict on them?

Any thought, tips and ideas would be awesome.

you would get a nice old krico for that money. i HAD a cz452 supermatch, bought a 1960 model krico for half the money that shot better groups. look on usedguns, there's a really nice krico in south oz for $320 i beleive. if i didn't already have mine i woulda bought that one . the only other brand in that price range is voere. also german made. have heard good things about these

A Toz17 should be under that. Accurate, rugged and reliable, just be sure you get a magazine (and hopefully a spare) with it. The Russian firearms seem to be more consistent than the Chinese ones.

You need to check the condition of any secondhand firearm as many "Good" guns may have been poorly maintained in the past reducing them to poor shooters.

i too have heard good things on norinco's. not a fan of stirlings myself. don't have fond memories of those things from 30 years ago. i do have very fond memories of a sportco 22 semi auto but. anyone remember them ? it had a vent on the left side of the barrel that would burn your hand if ya weren't careful  sorry getting of topic.

I firmly believe the Lithgow model 12 is the best 22 ever made. There are heaps around. Find one with a scope. They are beautifully made, very accurate with a lovely slick action. They were made as a farmer gun in an era when steel and machining was good. They are way ahead of the Stirling , norinco etc offerings of the same era. They will serve you well. I;have 8 of them .

Interesting...
What are the triggers like...?
Ive shot a friends old Lithgow 22--not sure of model, but the over curved & horrible trigger turned me right off...!

For what its worth, i expressed great interest in that rifle & wanted to test it out...they are out in rural area so no problems in ripping out a few rounds to see if it shoots.
I told them if it all works fine ill give them cash there & then...
But they were not at all keen on me firing it even under their supervision...
So i let it go...& now they dropped the price...

The model 12 has an adjustable trigger that can be made into a good crisp hunting trigger. Not a target trigger but good all the same. None of the other models ( 1a, 1b or 55) had the adjustment screw) Lithgow should not be judged by the single shot models.
The model 12 is a copy of the Winchester 69a from an earlier period. They have a great reputation in the states. Our model got the barrel blanks from 303 Lithgows, coachwood stocks and a pressure spring magazine retainer.

For that money you can pick up a decent Toz/Baikal and a compatible entry level scope. Can't go wrong.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

this took about 1/2 an hour and is within your budget with scope
I would think any of these are worth while but I personally would be looking at the krico for the price :drinks:

Could your mate cancel his mobile phone contract for a year and save up a bit to increase his options and budget?
