Hey Psytops,

It's tough mate, there are way more hunters than properties and most owners are shooters themselves.

Not trying to talk you out of trying but asking random owners to let an unknown person on their property to shoot is a long shot.

Not sure if I understood your comment right but did you mean 6 hour drive to somewhere and hope to find an owner on the day? Forget that one.

Get to know other shooters at the range, or on the forum when local meets happen. Go from there.

I'm planning on going around and asking some farms when I eventually get a rifle. I've got a petite asian girlfriend who is getting into hunting with me so that might help to make us look more appealing. My question is.. how do I know if a farm i likely to have rabbits / foxes that need clearing?

Can't you Mexicans shoot in the state forests? Probably be a little easier going down that path whilst getting to know others shooters and making some contacts. I've got some land in N.W NSW you can go shoot on but that's a bit more then 6 hrs from Melbourne. I hear Trump is building a wall and making you pay for it so get in quick :)

one of the ways i do it here in the states is i work on tractors and trucks in a trade off to hunt.
farms are a lot of work and a little sweat in the form of help will go a long way.

yeah, that's likely to have the opposite effect...

If you regularly drive through, aim to take your breaks in the nearest town, stop at the local bakery for a pie and coffee during your travels, say hi to the people, have a bit of a chat and become a face they know, then start talking to people about farming and their farms and show some genuine interest.
People are a lot more likely offer you access if they see you as an OK sorta bloke. And you never know, someone may start talking about how the pigs are ruining their fences in the top paddock...

Or take photos of your hot Asian girlfriend in a bikini shouldering rifles, write your phone number on the back and drop them into mailboxes...
Somebody is bound to invite you over...

OK OK, I'm sorry, but couldn't resist :)

This is how I've gotten all my properties - if you don't ask you won't get! I see a farmer in the paddock, I stop and have a chat to em and let em know what I'm up to in the area and 9 times out of 10 they say you are more than welcome to shoot here if you'd like :D

They will either say yes or no! I think I've only ever been knocked back one in about 10 or more properties so the success rate is pretty good so far

Saying that you have an 'Asian' girlfriend is like saying shes a 'human'..... given that 50 or perhaps 60+% of the global population are from 'Asia' extends from Egypt, through the Middle East, from the Dardanelles through Turkey easterly all the way through Russia just shy of Alaska down to the northern outskirts of Australia..... so your GF is human.....perhaps.......Pakistani?? :P Some of those Afghani women are quite attractive :silent: even the Russians... ;)

There was another recentish thread on gaining access.... I think the consensus was to bring along alcohol and be nice...

a) think of every person u know and if they might know any contacts on farms.. You'd be surprised who some people know... A friend of ours who I assumed for years knew nothing about shooting, turned out to be friends with a winery in SE Qld who was having probs with deer... They asked he owner for me and next thing I'm onto a deer property...
B) go for a meal at small country pubs and shout a beer or two... We were out west on another trip once and by the end of the night, most of the local farmers were arguing over whose property we'd go to next... Got about 3 phone numbers that night....
C) one you get a property, work your ass off to impress them... We do odd jobs on the properties we go to, always take them beers/rum and even wine for the missus... Few of the places we go love when we bring a kilo or two of jerky to eat while they work the fields...
Don't get pissed out there and don't shoot around the farmstead etc
Find out their rules and pretty soon you'll have a couple of places to go
D) try letter boxing but I reckon meeting farmers in person is much better....

Pretty soon you'll have more than enough farms, so much so, you'll prolly end up only visiting the one place for many years to come..

Do you have farmers that sell stuff by the roadside on their farms? Like veggies and eggs?

If so, drop by a few times and buy some stuff. Then tell them you want to put in a few days of work on fences, chicken coops, etc. each year for permission to get rid of their pests. Work first, shoot later. Then more work. Labor is fulfilling when you don't do it 250 days a year, and if you are not a farm boy the farmer will end up teaching you some things as well. Now you have a friend. He might come over to your place and help you replace the planks on your deck. They are very handy friends to have. I have one. We built an "anything goes" range together on his property. We also built two chicken coops. One on wheels. He takes the flock on wheels and moves it around his fields. The chickens eat all the grass and bugs and crap all over, then he moves it to a new spot so the old spot can recover. I know machines, electricity, and chemicals but not home construction. He taught me how to build residential/utility type structures (the right way). I am in his last will and testament to take possession of his firearms on behalf of his kids so his wife doesn't do anything stupid with them.

More so back in the day, now, not really since the socialist republic of local and state governments impose conditions and requirements, you know, to keep us safe, depending on whether the stuff sold is straight from the paddock or prepared in any way.... Planning permits, food registrations, food permits, business insurance, PI & liability insurance, trading permits, business permit, business registrations, road side trading permits....throw in compliance inspections and then the random inspections, just in case....

You'd think 'they' dont want us running a business or even just feeding each other.

Lots of people do an honesty box type system.

Set up a stall on the roadside near their property with bags/boxes of whatever there wares are with a $ sign and people leave cash and take how much they want.

Yeah, I tried that but didn't have any success at all. The farmers took one look and bolted!

I was dressed neatly, no camo gear, was in a nice clean black station wagon, but no go! Could be my trade - I'm a undertaker...

Cheers, :allegedly:

The worst part is going onto a property, asking for permission and get rejected, while listening to shots going off in the hills on the property. And that you are 100% sure there's deer there because you've seen the mob more than once on your drive pass.
