On a fox hunting mission

Well as the title say's I'm on a mission, a fox hunting mission that is , a friend of mine has or rather had a few chooks and has been loosing them to a sneaky fox (seven gone so far) it has started to take them during the day as they now get locked up before dark,used to be just after dark until they started to go missing.

anyhoo, i'm going out this arvo and will set a couple of cage traps up and maybe a leg hold or two (he has a little dog so the leg holds maybe out) and do the old sit and wait and whistle routine for a few hours. with a bit of luck ill get to shoot it and if not it may get trapped either way would be a good result

i will let you know how it goes

no luck tonight but i do have the cage traps out so if he comes around later im still in with a chance i saw two roos about ten rabbits and one fox giving me the finger

They can be a bit reluctant to respond to the whistle at this time of year (more interested in finding mates I think. What did you put in the cage traps for bait Tom?

if only missed two but they were snap shots so i didnt care much anyway the worst was a shot at one,miss, it hops away but stops a fair way out,i get to a fence post, line up, bang, hit the dirt just in front of it, it hops away and stops again, more sideways this time,line up with the xhairs above its ears pull the trigger and it moves and the bullet hits the dirt where it would of been

just a quick update, so far the cage traps have caught ,,,,,1 magpie,,,,1 white cat and drum roll,,,,,,,1 little black dog

the cat and the dog are the owners pets and the magpie was released unharmed but very angry

traps rebaited and we will see what happens

hopefully the next thing you trapped is a fox or at least something of a similar color lol.

i had a problem of my chickens going missing also, but the culprit for me was my dog lol

They're bloody fantastic for catching the pets of the people who put the traps down

update no 2.....two neighbour hood dogs have been put down after attacking old mates dog , no more chooks gone missing

so,, no fox but mission completed,, at least for now,,,,oh and it looks like the dogs might of got the cat (missing) oops i mean

$180 ish vet bill so not too bad ,mainly stiches, he will be fine

Yep... early winter about 1/2 doz houses all had their chooks demolished. Everyone was blaming a quoll. I trapped a quoll in a cage and relocated it over the river in the hills, where a mate who works with wildlife say's there's a good population. They're cool little critters close up. Bloody cranky things, though!

Anyway... turns out some local Jack Russel was causing all the carnage. The owner was told about the dogs issues and no-one has lost a chook since.... haven't seen the dog around either.....
