Fox or dingo identification?

Post by Blr243 » 03 Jan 2020, 7:48 pm

I was at a waterhole and a sett of cattle yards and saw quite a few foxes then all off a sudden this big dog came trotting across from right to left. It seemed taller with longer legs and gave a different brighter heat signature thru the scope. It did not stop to interact with the foxes. From the photos u see the longish ears of the foxes. But the long ears are not visible in the possible dingo photo U would think that if it were looking at me it would have its ears pricked and faceing me to use all senses to identify me .i took forever to shoot because I thought it could be a farmers dog with a collar but by the time it got fully broadside to me u can see that there’s no collar. It was 20 m from me. I was just about to shoot when it moved and I did not shoot it. The area is not known for dingoes. The first pic I will post is a fox coming to the whistle. Next pic is a drinking fox that I shot. Third pic is the possible dingo. Foxes look a bit fluffy in a thermal scope but mange takes away often all the fluff so perhaps it just a mangy fox What do u think. ? No big long pricked ears make me think it’s a dingo.

I’ll try to work out how to post a u tube vid. A vid of the animal walking might help you make a decision.

I’m kicking myself for not hitting the trigger. It’s got me so excited to think there’s a dingo there. Getting a pic of a dingo in an area where thes supposed to be none feels like I have got a pic of Sasquatch..... I can see why DJ sits on dams all night waiting for a crack at one. It’s common for me to get bored after a while and go stalk some pigs in the open then come back to the water hole later for another look .... but now I feel like sitting in a high seat and waiting all night for that dog to return. End of jan it will be hot. Hopefully that’s one of his regular holes. I’ll be waiting ...

Doesn’t look like a fox (that last pic) but hard to be sure without watching it. Foxes tend to have those really short little quick steps and they slink along the ground more than dogs. Looks like a greyhound haha

I just had a thought that maybe the scope was wound up more than usual so it looked bigger to me. ( it was the size that initially made me think dog when I first saw it ) Normally I have it on 1.6 times for easy target aquistion and once I’m settled prior to taking the shot I will bump the setting up to 3:2 or 6.4 or occasionally 12.8 ..... I just checked my iPad and on the photo it said 3:2 times mag so maybe that made it look bigger than the foxes I usually see .....will be interesting to hear your opinions either way

Do you use PiP (picture in picture) on your scope?

Not yet pip but I realised recently I can have the main pic low mag and the pip higher mag so I don’t have to be changing back and forth. I spoke it’s best of both worlds , precise aiming with the pip and wider field of view to help stay with the action when it happens. Thanks for the reminder. I gotta practice with that it should be a big help

That's a wild dog see when it leans forward the back legs tuck in to balance the stance is a dead give away when standing upright so mate you missed out on a wild dog but to clear your mind compare it with a fox you've shot standing side on if you have kept the image

I managed to make the video file smaller into an emailable format so I’m working on getting that vid somehow. And I found a side on pic of a fox from a vid I took ...fox pic attached here ..... I have developed a very focused desire to get this dog I don’t care if I have to sit on the hole all night for a week just to get him. I know they patrol their boundaries regularly and it’s january , it’s hot there’s bugger all water round atm And he knows he can get a feed them from all the dead pigs I have been shooting just for him .. I don’t care about work , customers or money .... I will immerse myself in this tiny 200 square metre part of Australia and get it done
