Revisit the Tikka .223

Post by Die Judicii » 08 May 2020, 7:49 pm

Not too long ago I purchased a new Tikka T3X in .223
When firing the 1st half doz shots to run it in, I quickly realized that the trigger was terrible.
After some discussions on here it was suggested that I get a "Yo Dave trigger spring" which I did.
I bought two actually (one for another rifle)
I got them in the post but have not yet been able to get them fitted.

Today I thought "I'll just get the Tikka out and run a couple more through it.
The paper target (below) is just roughly done with a felt pen, and this is what it produced.
If it stays consistent,,,, and improves even more when I get the Yo Dave fitted,,,,,, I think it'll be a winner in my books.

I think you can get the next five shots to touch each other if you concentrate. Try some quality reloads.

Nah,,,,, I don't bother with reloading,,,,,, nor fancy shooting bags and the like.
Just lean over the Rsend or bonnet of the ute.

I'm a firm believer of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

If that paper were a dog it'd be pushing up daisies, and that's good enough for me.

Hi Tas,
 Tell him to get ready for the fine for defacing the Queens currency.

Yer Mates rifle must have a better trigger than this one of mine. (out of the box)
Mine is that hard/stiff,,,,,,, that I invariably finish up jerking the trigger.
So,, it will be interesting to see how it performs once I get the new spring fitted (if I get that far)

You can lighten the trigger a little by screwing out the grub screw but since you have the spring, you might as well remove the screw and replace the spring while you have it out of the stock. Only a five minute job and it will transform the trigger.

We used the printed targets from on here - 5c coins and up lol. But I printed them in dark green and they were a bitch to see. Yeah - I’m not going to lie, several of us stood there with our jaws on the floor.
Just after that I gave him some 62 gn tap reloads and he put those into 1/4 inch as well - all using a no name 3-9.
One of the other guys there recently put those same springs into 3 x tikkas...they do make a helllof a difference.

Thanks Marksman, Tassie, and SCJ

I'll look into the spring issue in the next day or two.
Have been busy the last couple days ripping up concrete (previous owners f@ckup) in readiness for new,,,, with the correct fall.

But have just decided to go out (oo:24) for whats left of the night to follow up some more wild puppies.
Just as well I hardly ever sleep.

Will let you know how I get on with the spring.
Apparently the same spring kit also does the Sako 75 so I'll try to kill two birds.

Well I had a crack at fitting the "Yo Dave" trigger spring this afternoon.
I must say it really does make things easier and with better results.
I ran out of Winchester, so did this with Federal.

I just sold my tikka 223 to a mate, which I shouldn't have done. It just shot a 6mm group at 150meters with 40gr zmax's and a stiff load of 2207. I'm pissed, because my howa 223 wont stabilise anything less than a 55, which will be the premise for my next thread... Tikka 223 is a formidable varminter, with those 40gr pills it's just deadly.

Nice shooting. How do you rate the Tikka trigger now?

I'll have to answer that in a roundabout kind of way.
About 6 years ago I bought a 2nd hand 453 CZ in .17HMR (heavy barreled)

Tried it out on paper, and I was really happy with it.
First time I took it out after game, I had a bunny in my sights, fired and completely missed.
:wtf: :unknown: It was a sitting target, and at the same sort of distance.
I concluded that maybe I had somehow given the scope a hard knock,,, so I set up the paper and tried it.
Result was a near perfect hit on the paper.

Next time out bush,,,, the whole sad scenario repeated itself after missing yet another prime opportunity.
And it kept happening,, even tho in between I could still kill the paper targets stone dead each and every time.

I was gutted,,,,,,, and hated that rifle.
If someone had said they needed a rifle I probly would have "given" it away.

Then I discovered that it had a "set trigger",,,,,,,,, and after starting to use it I was amazed at the difference.
Now, I love that little rifle, and would never part with it.
But,,,,,,,,,,, in the beginning it destroyed my self confidence,,,,, and that is something that is hard for me to regain

So,,,,,,,,,, with the Tikka I'm just gonna have to take small steps, and let the love build up.
But I am torn between using that or my beloved Howa 22/250 that has served me loyally for a long time,,, and still does.
I went out after another dog that is starting to p!ss a farmer off,,,, last night, but opted for the Howa instead.

I will get there,,,,,,,, but it ain't gonna happen in a big rush.
I will concede that it's hugely much better with the new spring,,, but I'm not too sure at the moment whether it needs a tiny amount less or more adjustment.
