Very annoying squeak

Post by Die Judicii » 27 Sep 2020, 11:09 pm

Hey fellas,, any solutions happily received.

As some of you are aware,,,, I do a lot of shooting at/during the night.
I shoot over a bench rest that is mounted in the back of my ute (stealth and sniper type tactics)
I have used many and varied types of rests that adapt quickly to height and angle requirements.
But,,,, my all time favorite is four hessian bags that are fairly loosely rolled and tied.

Problem being that a lot of my rifles when rested on the roll emit a squeaking sound as the rifle is rolled or swiveled sideways on the hessian.
Some of the easy fixes I thought of was,,,,,, a microfleece tea towel in between,,,
,,,,,, an ordinary old bath towel,,,,,,
,,,,,,, an old woolen jumper,,,,,,,
,,,,,,, a piece of calico ,,,,,,,,

But nothing has worked.
I believe it is caused by the smooth polished fore end,,,,,,,, and tho it isn't really all that loud, I reckon a dog would hear it on a dead calm night.

Anybody got any suggestions on how to make a squeak free night,,,,,,,, and NO I'm not gonna take coarse sand paper to the fore end.

Take the rifle out of the safe many hours before a bush trip and rub many different types of cloth against it till u find one with no noise. And if no joy consider keeping the rag damp and see if that works, not ideal but better than squeaks ......siege , dj s Hunting method involves sitting perfectly silent for a long time , and then one big deafening roar , a dead dog , then pack up and drive home. ....silence after the shot not real important

Hee Hee Hee,,,, Zeig

It's what happens BEFORE the God Almighty explosion that really matters,,, otherwise there is no big bang.

What happens afterwards is of bugger all consequence.

Thanks Mate.
I'm thinking of trying a piece of genuine lambs wool/hide, to see if that squeaks on the wool.

If that works, it would be so ironic,,,,,,, seeing as "lambs and sheep" are the main reason I'm out there.

Velour, not sure about my spelling , you know that soft I think they make seat covers out of it , also on some inflatable mattress they have just pvc on one side and velour on the other. Velour is a fabric I thought of in my last post but I did not mention it. There’s bound to be something quiet. When I was bow hunting I hated the noise my canvass gaiters made against dry or prickly plants so I covered my gaiters with nice soft quiet fabric and off course it thennattracted all the spear grass and burrs under the sun but you just can’t have everything you want

I glued a thin strip of Linatex® to the underside of my rifle stock using contact adhesive to stop it making noise and slipping.

Works a treat

Hey DJ try spraying the bag lightly with lanoline then brush your hand across it to rub it in, it helps the rifle slide into positions as well don't spray too much just enough to stop the squeak, i use a chunk of coolite, like rectangle with different height sides nice and light, although it squarked pretty loud so i give it a spray and bingo , also it won't harm anything on the rifle

Tan a fox hide , rub scented talc into it if it’s a tough smelly ....lay your rifle across the top of the fox skin ....the stock will easily glide Silently into position

Blr put up what l believe will be the answer being talcum powder but a non smell variety
bench rest shooters do it on their bags to stop the stock grabbing so it will will slide easily
l reckon it will do the job

Today I called in to a St Vinnies shop on my way out of town.
A quick walk around,, and I located a genuine lambs wool hide that was I think a liner in a babies bassinet.
It's dyed a dark apricot color,,,,, but who cares in the dark.

It's just the perfect shape and size to lay over my bag roll.
Hopefully it will eliminate the squeak,,,,,,,,, and for only $20

If it doesn't have the desired effect,, at least it'll make sitting all night more comfy.
