Well, at least I'm on target

Post by Die Judicii » 21 Oct 2020, 12:08 am

Last night I was out and waiting on a pair of oinkers that have appeared on camera off and on for a few days.
At about midnight they hadn't shown up, so I thought I'd pack up and go home.

For those that don't know,,,, we are in the midst of a mouse plague,, and at any given time of night the pesky little
rodents can be seen creeping, hopping, running in and out of the grasses.
Approx 30 or 40 in a 100 or so square meters is a common sight.

These little rodents light up brilliant white under the thermal.

Just as I was about to start packing up,,, I thought, I wonder if I can shoot one.

So I picked one (just on 80 meters out) and started tracking it as it moved about,,,,,, several minutes went by until it came to a standstill.
The moment it sat motionless, I squeezed the trigger.

Wow,, it was spectacular,,,, I wish I had been able to video it.
It exploded into about 30 tiny pieces that splattered for a meter all round.

The HP .308 projectile (intended for pigs) was right on target.

I guess that mice would come under the heading of Vertebrate Pest Control,,,,,
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

Yeah mate a 308 should be enough gun for a mouse.
I do hope it was a well aimed head shot so the animal didn’t suffer.   :drinks: :drinks: :drinks:

Two Queenslanders: one shoots mice with a large calibre rifle and the other chases them at night for a photo opportunity.

Very strange ...

Boredom, I'd say, mate, having the freedom to wander around the bush with little restriction, as long as you don't cross the border, ATM, might get a bit boring for some.

I once patted one on the head as he sat very still hoping I would not see him. The strange behaviour is running riot up here

308 is a bit small for mice don't you think? I reckon you really needed a 450 nitro or maybe 585 hubel to do the job humanely
