Another potentially silly question

Varminting and vertebrate pest control. Small game, hunting feral goats, foxes, dogs, cats, rabbits etc.

Another potentially silly question

Post by longneck75 » 08 Feb 2021, 3:38 pm

Can someone please advise if I have this correct.
In Vic even though on my license I have only listed Sport/Target shooting as my reason, I am still allowed to shoot rabbit and foxes on private land. yay or nay?

Can't help with an answer but it is a very good question.
Unless it has changed then in NSW you cannot legally hunt with a weapon not registered for that purpose regardless of what your license says
One well placed shot is all it takes.

G'day longneck75,
Sch 2, Clause 1, sub 2 of the Act, deems it legal to hunt on private property with the owners permission, Cheers.

I know its "legal" but can anyone with a license regardless of reason for having one do it? Or do you have to specifically have hunting on your license?

It's my understanding that in NSW that the Target , Hunting and Collecting on your license is actually a condition on your license . Nothing to do with registration . The genuine reasons asked by firearms registry applications is about having a good reason to poses that class of firearm either A, B, C etc . It does not state what gun can be used for what game or for what targets . However when you attend the range to shoot at a target you have to have target on your license . If you attend approved hunting club meeting or go hunting you have to have hunting on your license . However in NSW there does not seem to be a problem going to the range getting a SSAA receipt and ticking both hunting and target on the one receipt because during a license application you would have supplied the club approval numbers for the SSAA that covers both hunting and target shooting as long as your license has Target and hunting on it . The simplest way is to join the SSAA , get their target and hunting club approval number and apply to the firearms registry to have hunting added to your license , Go to a SSAA affiliated range six times a year , circle T and H on the book receipt and keep the receipts . That way you can hunt on any property that allows you on and you don't have to worry about properties getting sold out and you loosing your license hunting category justification .

If I were you I would check that out with the Victorian Police and gun registry first .
The license conditions of target Hunting and Collecting is there for a reason .
Victoria might be different but the license marked conditions are the same as my license in NSW so beware .

G'day,

With regard to the category 'primary producer' when applying for a shooter's licence don't claim this category unless you are a registered primary producer meaning you have an ABN specific to farming/primary production. The Registry folk will ask you to produce your ABN - I know as I tested them when my licence was up for renewal late last year. The application form only said 'primary producer' and, since I have been farming [fat lambs, now beef cattle] in a small way for market to boost income for 36 years, I nominated hunting and primary producer. The Registry fired straight back and asked for my non-existent ABN. I returned fire and told them I responded to their application/renewal form as it was written: it only stated 'primary producer', not registered primary producer. I suggested they revise their form to make it clear that they meant registered primary producers. I half expected my renewal to be knocked back for being a smart-arse, but they renewed my licence.

G'day JohnV,
Yes, we are different.
G'day longneck75,
The post I made refers exactly to what you asked, if you look up the Law, Firearms Act 1996 (v95), Schedule 2 it speaks about hunting with "target shooting" as your genuine reason, Cheers.

Yes apparently the asterisk denotes you cannot hunt pest animals on private property or crown land with a black powder cannon.
No mention of smokeless powder cannon.
I believe we have discovered a loophole.

I wish WA Police were sensible enough to give a similar guide.

Hey Ob, "Secret spot"?, don't blame you for putting that in (even though it was a joke)
Im now looking for other properties, my spot has been plundered, I still have permission to shoot there but the new wankers have crawled so far up the owners arse that they have to be surgically removed.
In three trips I've shot 3 bunnies, these new blokes have absolutely hammered the place, and when I was talking to them they started to whine that theres FA there...yeah cos you guys shot them all, ****** idiots.
Sorry about the rant, that's why the vids have all but dried up, but man am I spewing.
