Biggest game u think u could take with this bullet?

Post by Tubs » 06 Jul 2021, 5:24 pm

Have lots of these, not sure how suitable for hunting?

22 Caliber (224 Diameter) 55 Grain Hollow Point Boat Tail with Cannelure
https://www.hornady.com/bullets/rifle/2 ... 5-gr-hp#!/

Loading with 25gr of 2206H. Accurate out to 200 yards+. It certainly expands but tends to retain its shape better I reckon...

Havent fired at anything on 4 legs yet..... Thoughts?

goats for sure, pigs if shot in the head, obviously meets standards for roos, would work on a headshot on deer too but then again is that legal? would probably work if you headshot anything really as long as not too far away, seen camels shot with 223 before.

cheers. `

i like hornady products . family owned company who look after their customers . i believe new york state urged banks to review their relationship with the NRA and firearms related businesses from using banks (or something like that ) , hornady openly stopped providing the police and other authorites in new york with ammo :D
i have a hornady classic press, dies and other gear and have no complaints . their primer tool also caters for lee and rcbs shell holders
hornady projectiles generally fly well , and are accurate

Your link lists it as a "varmint" bullet up to "50lbs", so for boiler room shots I'd say dogs, goats and smaller deer and pigs. If you're head shooting, then 'roos (to 200m max), and anything else that doesn't have a thickly protected brain.

Do kangaroos have four legs or two?

I've shot plenty of pigs with this, or other makers equivalent, running 3600fps in 22-250.

Yes, i have a Hornady iron press, mix of Lee and Hornady dies, Hornady auto powder dispenser. All of their gear is great. I still think Sierra projectiles are as good if not the best.

Would my Hornady HP 55's be inferior to Sierra Super-roo 55 SP's?

I shot a 80 kilo Billy in the back of the head from a little over 200 metres with one and he collapsed on the spot. If you are confident with a heart shot I am sure it would work. They work well on lung shots on foxes and cats which is likely their intended use.

yup i agree . shot placement on the dogs and goats does matter to be humane but . if you want to get more out of the 223 for goats a heavier projectile , 60 gn vmax or such wouldn't hurt , nosler do make a 60 gn partition for them if you got enough twist rate . not cheap though .
i new a fella who used to do chest shots on goats with win super x 55's . they used to go for a little run before expiring . head shot 55's will do the job

i just used to hit them with a 6.5x55 with 140 sst's way out and they'd just fall over :D

Head shots or neck shots on anything only. It is not really a controlled expansion bullet so it's performance is dubious and likely to be variable on meat or bones.

Behind the shoulder chest shots with any decent 50gr or more bullet will anchor a goat to 150m. Their ribs are not that tough. But a shoulder shot or angling one...hmm

It may well under penetrate or over penetrate as it is not really designed for a particular hunting purpose in my view.

I have had mixed success with them where on chest shots on dog's some have pencilled through but others have performed well, but when they hit decent resistance they have performed well.

Having said that I do like their performance on animals up to 50kg.
