Odd behavior

Post by Die Judicii » 04 Sep 2021, 2:46 pm

Last night I was set up for dogs and looking along an old fence that went slightly down hill through thick trees.
This created an alley way of sorts with a cleared dozer width on either side of the fence.
At one stage I spotted something moving about,, at approx 450 or 500 meters.
Thinking it was a dog I decided to give the old "Scotch Predator" caller a try.

I was pleased to see an immediate and favorable response.
It bolted straight along the fence heading in my direction.
I was however completely surprised to see when it was close enough in detail ,,, that it was in fact a very large Hare.

When it propped, I sent it to the Hare Afterlife.

I have heard from a Mate many years ago that he was using one (for foxes) and was taken by surprise when a Fallow deer came trotting directly
towards him and seemingly intent on finding the source of the sound.

But after last night, it seems to me that the sound they put out must make a lot of species very curious.

Has anyone else had similar experiences ?

When i was hunting with dogs, when it was legal in victoria. Well the dogs were well trained. If behind me by command they could’nt break no matter what. Have to follow my lead. I can release them. If ahead of me they have full initiative to work. 3 dogs learn to work very effectively together.

I had three dogs walking with me down a track. A fox came towards us straight down the track from opposite direction and then sat in front of us and just looked at us.
My dogs just looked at it. They were confused. theres no stimuli to trigger them. It’s not fleeing. So they just stood there and looked at it. It felt like a long time, it was’nt but it was just the pause in the movement of the hunt.
So i released them, they approached the fox very slowly. Only when it moved did it go to fox heaven instantly. There was literally fox intestines hanging from surrounding branches.
I don’t know why but those dogs really did’nt like that fox. Something about the whole situation challenged them and the pack. They taught it a hard lesson.

Yes,I've used fox calls to call in quite a few hares. Also used to use the fox call to get rabbits to come into the scrub from the open paddocks for a closer shot too

G'day DJ,

I bought this call: https://www.huntinghaven.com.au/p/scotc ... aller/2150 after reading an article on calling hares with it.

Here's the article: http://www.sportingshooter.com.au/news/hunting-hares

If I move the call it makes a noise that drives my German shepherd mad.

Yeah Mate, that's identical to the one I've got minus the mouse squeaker.
I have found with my dogs in the past (Rotties & Shephards) that it certainly gets em going,,,,, but they also very quickly learn that it's nothing
worth eating and consequently ignore it from then on.

As "Oldbloke" also mentioned,,,,,, it does have a certain technique to it.
And I believe time of year etc also plays a part.

I usually muffle mine with my thumb so it's not so loud and raucous, and also shake it as I stretch and squeeze it.
If you have heard or imagine something being violently shaken as it is being attacked by a fox,, that is what I aim at replicating.

I've found it to be excellent on foxes,,,, but to date haven't had luck with dingo/feral dogs.
Which I'm working on in regard to time of year, and also differing weather conditions.
But that being said, I don't usually have the time to experiment due to their elusiveness, as in they seem to suddenly appear, and if you don't take the shot
you can miss out altogether.
Only if I see one beyond "sure shot" range and its then maybe worth trying to call it in.
Whereas the property owners just simply want to see a dead dog,,,,,,

Yes but were they the sort of 'sorts' you could take home and introduce to Mum?

Ha ha,some of them lol.
Seriously though I've called foxes, hares, cats, and the odd crow and hawk. My son used one to call 8n a fox when he was 2 even. Not that he knew it though,he thought it was just fun to jiggle it around making noise lol
