Foot hold trap the Vixen well away from the den. If you get a cub by setting close to the den, she will shift camp.

Once you have caught the Vixen, then cage trap the cubs/kits.

I know this by personal experience!!

A p s advice sounds logical. I have no experience trapping but I did once find a vixen with Cubs very well hidden in a huge pile of pushed tangled logs in a cultivation paddock. It was night. I had my 243 and thermal. Got mum first then picked off the young ones as they came to see why mum was laying down. They definitely lack direction without their leader and become vulnerable

I saw a vixen with 5 or 6 pups today in state forrest. In heavy cover of logs and bracken. Pups were playing. I waited about 90 minutes. Couple of times the vixen moved, but still no clear shot. Very frustrating.

Would have been very difficult to get a shot if it come running so didn't try the whistle. If I had the shotty I would have whistled but had one of my rifles.

I'll go back but will be about a month till I can get back. Hopefully they are still there.

Up cape York I walked past a bunch of Young dingo pups once .. they were playing while mum was off hunting somewhere ....They were about chihuahua size but more solid and Very healthy looking ..I was on my way back to camp walking thru eucalyptuses Forrest. About five minutes after I sat down in my camp chair I can hear one of them crying/ calling out and it sounded like he was trying to find me ... cheeky little bugger came waltzing right into my camp. He had followed my scent .....sometimes animals do crazy stuff

Agree, a shotty would have scored.

They were about 120yards away. Lots of scrub/bracken between us. That's life.
In a way I felt luck too.

10m is too close. Try 50m plus.
At 10m even very young cubs could be caught.
And try not to use food as lure

Haven't really thought about a cage but I suppose in the right place mat work OK. Just use rubber jawed foot hold traps, either blind set or with a lure ,KFC chicken leg or lamb bone works well. Should a dog front, gets it too.

Cage traps work better than foot holds on little cubs etc. Good chance they won't spook the others and as a bonus you can catch more than one at a time
