1080 time

Post by CT hillbilly » 26 Oct 2021, 6:10 am

just a heads up the we are conducting a 1080 baiting campaign around the charters towers regional council region for the next 5 weeks this should only effect those allowed or who have planned a hunt soon, so check with your property owner and see if we have been there, we have been around the dotswood area and now today we head for Greenvale for the week and then head south 8-)

Sodium fluoroacetate. Nasty stuff, but effective in many ways. Even though I will be nowhere near there, head sup advice is always welcome, especially with this stuff.

Sodium monofluoroacetate to be exact. Here is a picture of some I took 2 weeks ago.

Does anybody know how 1080 got its name (without Googling it)

If I remember from my licensing course 1080 was the entry number in a chemical register , or something like that. There were 1079 other chemicals mentioned first.

Sounds a bit like WD40,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :D
It was the 40th different batch they made that was considered a success and saleable.

Very close...
It was the invoice number from the lab when it was sent to the US. There was also a 1081 but it wasn't as good.
Well done :)

I didn’t remember much from that course, but I also remember them saying there was only one case of a human surviving 1080 poisoning . A factory worker where they made it was poisoned and survived but was so messed up in the nervous system there was no pain and no recollection.

Yes, sodium fluoracetate converts in the body to fluorocitrate. There is a latent period while this occurs. Citrates are cells energy but the fluoro stuffs the cell. Irriversible once it starts.

You either have a lethal dose and die, or survive. No antidote.

Yeah, it will be mostly the same money just rebadged and recycled as something else. Usual government.

There has been some extra money around for feral pigs since disease rampant in our near neighbors.

Pig numbers are up a bit since widespread rain this year across most of Australia.

Dunno why you in "full chem suit"? Jeez it's not that dangerous to handle as bait. Gloves and overalls is sufficient.

Interesting that you are doing dog baiting at this time of the year. Generally better in September

April or May is also a good time. Good for foxes too. The early research that started aerial baiting showed that those two times of the year are best based around breeding, whelping and in some places, water

Lol. "Sperm suits"

They want you to use them so you don't take any 1080 home to the Mrs and kids.

we prefer meat baits to be dried for a day or 2 to allow blood to drain so 1080 isn't diluted to much

You dont want the "blood to drain" after they are injected. The 1080 will be in the blood so you lose it from the bait.

Drying the meat for a day or two puts a skin on the meat, reducing loss of the 1080 and fluid and hopefully making the bait a little less effected by moisture, ground bacteria and insects. The biggest killers of 1080 meat baits are some types of bacteria, fungi and loss through water/rain.

we had some property's show up with more maggots than meat in some places most are really good with there meat prep, when they show up with 4-500kg of roo meat just bought from the game meat supplier one tends to think there success rate maybe down compared to others who kill there own it tends to be wetter blood wise

Any bacteria, including meat "going off" (slimy, smelly, green, etc) means that bait probably won't kill dog's as the 1080 will break down.

As I said, you don't need blood, you only need the meat to be moist. That allows the 1080 to move throughout the bait.

Baits can be rancid or blown up too!
The meat on the ground have been rejected as unsuitable.

I do some contract baiting for some councils here in SE Qld, finished a job last month where baits got laid in peri urban areas. Baits are tethered so that non target species don't carry them away. Just order the amount of injected baits and pick them up from the DPI depot the day you start.
Depending on which council, baiting is done April/May and September/October which comprise of laying baits, picking up untaken baits 7 days later, then a follow up baiting 30 days later.

That's good. Tethered baits have a lower rate of bait caching by foxes as well.

Years ago I shot a massive boar with my bow on some sorghum stubble when I was tired walking home to camp after an uneventful morning , as soon as I released the arrow I ran flat out for the nearest brigalow Bush I could see and hoped like hell that the spindley branches would hold my weight high enough out of the boars reach . But not necessary, the boar ran the other way into the wind and expired 15 from where I shot him. A day later the grazier said he needed all the meat for dingo baiting so I had to retrieve the boar and butcher it into small pieces. It was bordering a bit disgusting but these are the things we gotta do if we want to keep our hosts happy

true! in a prefect world our dog baits have to be between 120g and 250g DAF regulations with pig baits between 400g and 500g a dog bait we will inject 1mm of 10mm 1080 (dog strength) and a pig bait gets 2mm of 36mm 1080 ( pig strength)

I think you mean 1ml of 10mg 1080 and 2ml of 36mg.
But even these rates don't make sense.

Dog baits should contain 6mg of 1080. Commercial 1080 liquid is 30mg per ml, meaning you inject 0.2ml into a dog bait.

Try again
