I imagine a few farmers would be nervous about this proposal.

Correct, NE & NW Vic.

I think the plan is to introduce them in the SW and Sth coast

Dingoes controlling cats?
Must be why there are no feral cats up North.
Wait a minute! There are heaps of feral cats up North!

Well at least its good that cats can't climb trees to get away . Oh......Umm...

The well known areas for dingoes/dog are where I mentioned. See image.

However I have no doubt there are dogs elsewhere in the state. I myself have seen what appears to be sign well outside those areas and heard of dogs being sighted and shot close to Melbourne. But AFAIK outside those areas the density is much lower. I'm sure they would be transient as well.

Foxes and cats do exist where there are dingoes. The question is whether the existence of the dingoes is enough to allow native fauna to increase in numbers.

Hope the sheep farmers are ready for compensation

Funny,I've heard of way more encounters with dingoes in the central high country than those other areas.

Quote “ Professor Euan Ritchie, Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at Deakin University, said there would be numerous benefits if it happened, mainly when it comes to pest control. He mentioned the dingos could control kangaroos, feral goats, foxes and feral cats numbers and later mentioned pigs and deer. “

This is hilarious.

Quote “ The purpose of releasing the dingoes would be to regulate kangaroos, goats, foxes and feral cats numbers. In addition, the committee believes the reintroduction would protect smaller animals under threat, such as marsupials, birds and reptiles.“

if there were no more marsupials, birds and reptiles left to feed on. The easy meals.
If they were hungry enough sure they might expend he relative effort/risk on a goat or even a roo.
But before that they would feed on road kill and yummy lambs.

They will have an effect on the cat population though, because they’ll find the kittens.

I've seen crap loads of dogs over west of Strathbogie. No idea if they're "dingo" or not. They don't seem to be doing much for the feral cat population eitherway... Some of those bastards look like tigers.

Well, actually, my understanding is the majority are dog, rather than Dingo. Just what I've been hearing though.

The couple I've seen a few years ago were dog. But last year just got a glimpse/look of what "looked" like a "Dingo".

Don't they interbreed anyway? Will eventually be much of a muchness.

Correct. Just because they look legitimate doesn't mean much.
I think it was "grandadbushy" shot heaps and they were tested and 100% failure. All had at least some dog.

They are just like people. Might be white and look like a pommie but have 5% Asian in you.

Some come easy....some dont....a lot of time its right spot at the right time.... lots of unfruitful nights sitting out in the middle of nowhere scanning all night with the thermal monocular and not seeing a dog.......other times you get to see a few at all different hours of the night....as well as lots of early morning out trying to howl them in....
Had them howling back at me at 3am in the morning....would have been half a dozen in the pack.....and they were close, but wouldnt leave the safety of the bush....and believe me....that sound that close by so many puts shivers straight up the spine....
Iv smacked down quite a few for various different farmers up the high country....all different colours....plenty out there...

DNA tested dog's from Queensland, SA through to the Pilbara and Great Sandy Desert. Not one was 100% pure.

Looking and behaving like a dingo is enough.

Yes, domestic dogs and dingoes interbreed.

And the dingo genes are most dominant because most suited for survival in the environment. But they’re still domestic dog genes. If a pup threw a heap of labracocakadoodle genes mum would eat it. So the lineage gets sorted out pretty quickly.

They’re not like wolves or coyotes or foxes. They are a domesticated dog turned feral.
Call them dingos or feral dogs. Same difference. Same thing.
All arrived here at some point in time as domestic dogs and went feral.
Before European settlement they probably first arrived here from south east Asia, Indonesia around 4,000 years ago.
Hunter/ gatherer/ fishermen types who could’nt sail for s**t and got sucked down to the top end of Aus.
Both dogs in the photos above are the same. The coat colour means nothing.

They are ferals. Just like pigs are ferals. There’s no wild boar here.
They’re not really even part of the natural ecosystem. I dont see any marsupials that have evolved to survive apex predators.

And so. When some department of bureaucratic imbeciles release a pack of feral dogs next to your sheep station, be sure you are compensated fairly for stock losses and pest control and anything else you can think of.

Re: Victoria - Dingo Reintroduction

It has now been proven beyond doubt that (dingo's "proper") do promote the survival and continuation of Australian native marsupials such as the
Bilby, Native hopping mice, etc in extensive programs that are still currently being examined in northern Sth Aust. (easily found with google)

Fairly large tracts of land have been sectioned off with exclusion fences,,,, and foxes, feral cats and the like have been systematically exterminated
from within.
Then the native marsupials were re introduced,,,,,, and once established and breeding successfully,, Dingos were then added.
After quite some years the results have proven that all are persisting in a harmonious and successful manner.
Even the necessary plant life is again flourishing.

Note however,,,,,,,,, that sheep & cattle were never part of the program.
It is therefore fairly obvious that with present day practices and technology that the only successful way of allowing both sides to co exist is with the use
of properly constructed and maintained "Exclusion Fences"

Exclusion Fences are fast becoming the norm in the area of Qld where I live.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.
