Nah, he'll buy a bigger gun, 'cause that'll do it!
Like most numpties, probably rolled out of his roof-top tent at the crack of mid-day, roared around on his 4 wheeler for an hour, saw nothing, went back to camp and emptied all of the stubbies in his esky while bitching about there being nothing to shoot... :allegedly:

Yeah, I’ve talked to some property owners who’ve encountered hunters like that. Parking up and stalking in is too hard for some. Right on dusk is happy hour for pigs, but some fellas would rather be on the beer :P

I agree. I’ve been on some trips where I’ve hardly fired a shot. But sitting in the shade, on a ridge, looking out on vast bush land and quietly observing the birds and the odd echidna, emu or some of the more obscure wallaby species is just marvellous and very grounding

I'm not inclined to judge the seller too harshly given the lack of further details about their trip, but 600km is a long way to travel to discover you don't necessarily have what it takes to hunt.

Probably just lacks the time required on top of the eight-hour trip each way and, nowadays that driving can add a very significant cost to it. If you're driving 600km you really do need to spend a night or two in the bush on foot I reckon. But above all I think you do need to actually love being out in the bush, that's what really makes hunting worthwhile. If you hate the bush then hunting would just be a chore. It's probably going to be cold, wet, muddy and slippery, with abundant leeches and mozzies, perhaps even ticks, and it's very likely you won't see anything you can shoot in the first half dozen trips. You have to understand that you're going into unfamiliar territory and need to learn how the animals behave in that territory.

It's a real shame he's given up so quickly though, somebody up that way should contact him, take him out somewhere and show him what it's about - he might well be hooked for life then.

I'm with Blade. Pretty sad.
Reminds me of many years ago in the Vic high country. I was away for the weekend.
Two young blokes camped near me on their first deer hunting trip.

Someone (a prick) had filled their heads with BS. Example, deer s**t looks like cow pads. Prints look like horses prints, easy to shoot like rabbiting. You get the idea.

On top of that it pissed down all weekend, their tent leaked like a sieve and sleeping bags, now wet, were inadequate for the temperatures anyway. (all rented they said)

They went home early, probably never to return. I encouraged them to have another crack but they were over it.

Pretty sad. And that prick needs rooting.

Fundamentally hunting is not easy to learn without a mentor. Newbies need all the help they can get. Not BS.

Hunting is an acquired skill. It takes a lot of experience to become good at it.

Most inexperienced newbie's probably don't see much even when the game is there. The art of stalking is, to a fair degree, lost. Instant gratification with little effort is generally todays expectation, with everything.

But if you want to learn and persevere then it can be great experiences you are making.

It’s a pity if the bloke gave up after one trip. I remember when I first got back in to shooting several years ago I never saw a fox. In hindsight I know I just wasn’t attuned to what they look like at night under a spotlight. I have stuck with it and now I usually get at least one fox nearly every time I go out. The difference is I have learned where to look and what I am looking at. The whole experience has been great though. I love being out in the countryside. I learn something every time I go out. The more I do it, the more I enjoy it.
