Rabbit hunting - Toolangi/Wombat State forest advice

Post by cityslicker » 13 Nov 2023, 3:46 pm

Hey all,

First time going without my family that does shooting and first time shooting in a state forest.

Planning on going to Wombat state forest or Toolangi, to hopefully get some rabbits or hares (amateur cook).

Would there be any advice you would give for first time shooting in a state forest?

Cheers

Here's a good guide on shooting in State Forest https://www.gma.vic.gov.au/__data/asset ... forest.pdf

Don't think you'll get much luck with bunnies in the forest, perhaps on the fringes of farmers paddocks but rarely are they free roaming through the impenetrable scrub...

Occasionally you'll spot them on the track so keep your eyes open and track them in the scrub or sit and wait for 15 mins for them to re-appear after you've spooked them off. You'll want to try and spot them from within 80-100 yards or more if your eyesight is good that way you'll have better chance but honestly your best bet is to get onto someone who has property that's cleared and has rabbits the worlds your oyster then.

It’s very easy to get lost in a forest. So ideally a handheld gps.
Carry water whenever you leave the vehicle..
There’s nothing in wombat. It’s just a lifeless wasteland.
Toolangi has deer but it’s heavily hunted. And you might see foxes on the outskirts sometimes if you’re early.
Toolangi also gets a lot of trail bikes on the weekends which isn’t ideal.

And get this app. Scroll across the top once you’ve downloaded it and click on hunting. https://www.exploreoutdoors.vic.gov.au/where-to-start/more-to-explore
I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned
