Soft point v hollow point for goats

Post by andaloodaya » 13 Dec 2024, 7:11 am

Hi all, what does everyone prefer for hunting goats - soft point or hollow point?

I have a stash of 308 ADI ammo - some 165gr SP Sierra Gameking and some 135gr HP Sierra Gameking. Trying to decide which one to run with.

I would use the 135s.
But both will work.

I have used both on goats and they both work fine, depends what other game you might come across but I'd use the 135gn hp

Hi Mate
I agree with the above
Both will do just fine.
In my 308 rifles, I have found the ADI 135gr, to be very accurate. The below pic is 2 shots at 200 meters off a bench at the range.
I think the 135gr will be a bit more violent a projectile as it is a varmint projectile.
A well-placed shot with either will do the job. Sight your rifle in for one of them and Bob's your uncle.
Happy hunting.

Zero the 135gn and shoot the 165gn so you know where it goes.

We used 130gr hollow points aerial shooting many thousands of goats in years past. Recently we used 135gr hollow points out of .308 rifles on goats.

It starfishes them

Hi all
This is a follow up from my last post on this topic above.
I located a picture of a fox who strayed out in front of a; factory loaded ADI (Sierra) 135gr Hollow point from my 308, it was around the 100-ish meter mark at night, using a spotlight.
The reason I used the 308 is, it was what I had in my hands at the time. I usually use my 223 loaded with 55gr V-Max.
You can see the hollow point was quite devastating. The fox agreed with that assessment.
