Claimed Thylacine Thermal Footage

Post by MG5150 » 21 May 2025, 2:38 pm

Hi Everyone

The Thylacine Awareness Group has just released thermal footage of what they claim is a thylacine on the mainland (footage given to them by a hunter)

Given many of you here are experienced with thermals and fox/wild dog shooting, what do you reckon it is?

Original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH_5VGkvsA4...

PS. Have you encountered a thylacine, black panther or anything else you couldn't explain? I love hearing stories on these topics.

Yeah, because Genetic Extnction Point doesn't really happen in Population Genetics, and there are hundreds of animals still living in the bush without a single valid sighting in 90 years.

Convincing image but it’s not possible sadly.

Very close to re engineering them though and will see them in the wild again. It’s happening.

Just watched the video. Stupid old git, fox fox fox !!!!
As for the thermal, it would be the worst item available. "Proper" thermal will give you stunning image compared with that one.

Tail is too short. I agree likely a fox. But no experience with thermal here.

The full genome of the Thylacine has been 100% sequenced since January 2024, still no closer to cloning one.

We’ve outsourced this mob. They’ve got their s**t together https://colossal.com/thylacine/

And we have much closer living relatives than they had for their fluffy wolf. They pulled that of. Thylacine is piss easy. We got embryos stored in jars here.

We need this. We done f***ed up

maybe with thylacine reintroduced it might have a impact on feral cats and foxes , but i think they shot them out cause they preyed on sheep, lambs and chooks didn't they ?

More a perceived threat according to googly . Government bounty.

Foxes and cats would be their competitors. So the more we shoot the better.

We should have a few within the next ten years. Probably not on our mainland here. But the intention is to slap them all over the place eventually

What's the point of genetically engineering an animal's return to just have to protect it from being shot out again by knuckle draggers?
To have to hide it away, or to be gawked at in an enclosure by these same ignorants?

At any distance that it is visible. It is the quality of the image that is absolutely crap. I / we use thermal for contract work for the Govt. and this one shown is garbage. At even 300 m + a fox is clean and clear with real detail in the image.

The idea of reintroducing Thylacine first to Tassie then potentially mainland Australia is wild!

It would be much better for the environment to have them eat the cats and foxes, but not sure how we can avoid having the dingos (and now wild dogs) outcompete them like they did originally.

I also heard recently that one of the reasons the feral cat population is expanding and hard to control in outback areas is that the addition of dams to properties is providing an artificial water source they wouldn't otherwise have been able to live without... Hopefully this would contribute to Thylacine re-distribution.

But yes, I'm sure as soon as they are back, people are going to hunt them (whether intentionally or by accident. Hopefully we learned our lesson and don't have a repeat of it.

I’ve only seen the old one in the cage video where it’s pacing around. But apparently they can run faster than the average domestic dog. Not greyhound fast but still. Their favourite meal was wallabies. So yeah they can motor. The long spine is a bit of a giveaway.

When nature builds something with a long spine and tail it’s built for speed. Their resting gait here seems awkward, so maybe they do move at a decent clip in the open https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nBpyAOpzlEE

the point i guess is so scientists can say "look how brilliant we are", and so people can go see one in a cage , go "oooh" and "ahhh" , and feel warm and fuzzy inside. the Jurassic park movies have opened a pandora's box , and i don't reckon they stopped with "dolly" the sheep they cloned all those years ago . it may've seemed far fetched, but i don't think cloned, elite "supa-soldiers" is too far fetched these days .

i don't trust governments to have stopped cloning research on moral grounds :P

thanks for posting . their head looks similar to a roo in some ways . imagine if they started selling cloned thylacines as pets . way cooler than the average suburban-ite who wants a staffy dog . there'd be a lot less cats in the neighbourhood too...... ;)

It’s called CRISPR gene editing. The Chinese already do it with their elite soldiers.
Pandora’s box as you say. Can be used for good or evil. I think the good outweighs the evil.
But even if there was some sort of universal code of ethics, states like China wouldn’t adhere. And who knows what secretly happens in western countries militaries.

What, the myth of genetically cloned evil Chinese super-soldiers is included in that?
