Shotgun Chokes & Ammo For Foxes

Post by MG5150 » 11 Aug 2025, 11:40 am

Hi All

I recently purchased a Templeton T2000 on the back of the WA Firearm laws changing.

I've never done any sort of shotgun shooting and am new to the whole venture.

What choke should I be using for Fox shooting? I've included a screenshot of the user manual but it only refers to birds.

What distances is the shotgun effective for? Ammo recommendations are also welcome :)

I agree full choke bbs but I’m mostly pig hunting so I’m full choke 36 grams of aaa shot , so that’s what I hit my foxes with . I also have a Templeton 2000

I am no shotty expert, but do love shooting funguns
I just select the ammo and see how it shoots on a pattern board with tightish chokes to give a decent range.

BBs are a known fox shot and I like #2s as I got a good tight pattern with a tight choke.

I didn't like that 9 ball buckshot as it left holes big enough for a rabbit to jump through and it's too exy to see what choke it liked.

It seems safe enough to shoot slugs out of those guns with one size tighter than open, and I had no issues shooting about 40 rounds. It was very accurate through the 20" Dickenson.

AAA shot, also known as "buckshot" in some contexts, is a size of lead shot used in shotgun cartridges. It typically has a diameter of around 5.16mm (0.203 inches).

Make up a custom load of 36 gram weight a mixture of AAA and BB . Take just about anything . I used BB and 3 SG pellets in a load but AAA would be a better pattern .

Thanks. In my chart smallest Buckshot is .204 and called No 4. Then there is T at .20 and TT at .21. I am taking my Bushpig up the Range on Sunday to find a good pattern with the Full Choke. It didnt do much good with OO so I bought some other sizes to try. Also got a clip on thermal to put on the little Nightforce scope. I have one (I think) pesky fox hanging around I would like to nail.
