Wearing orange when hunting

Post by FuzzyM » 07 Aug 2014, 8:07 am

Just getting into hunting, I find myself trying to decide whether I should be wearing orange when I am out in the forest.

I'm not hardcore camo, I have a fair bit of natural coloured clothing I tend to wear anyway. However I would feel a little silly with a big hi vis vest on.....

If I was to get into deer hunting I would definitely bring something orange for deer covering purposes.

Where do you guys stand on this?

Its all about safety and its not as silly as it may seem.

There is a lot of choice these days when it comes to high vis hunting clothing for every climate and no matter where I am I always wear some sort of hunting high vis.

Animals are generally colour blind with the exception of ducks so I wear high vis with a light camo pattern to break up the solid colour.

There are some very good you tube videos on the subject. In some cases you are required to wear high vis here in NSW when hunting in state forests etc however I feel it is a good common sense practice to get into in any case

Yes, Shotfox, well stated. In the U.S.A. a couple of states made it a requirement when hunting and accidental shootings were reduced significantly. One doesn't need to be blaze orange from head to foot but a hat, vest etc would be great and as you said, it's a good common sense practice to adopt.

Should there be a mishap (heaven forbid) a bit a blaze orange will make spotting a lot easier.

Actually, all people hiking and bush walking etc should adopt this practice. Might same a lot of man hours searching.

Cheers,

Yep, always wear a hivis orange cap or beanie. Much cheaper from the local ohs shop than the lgs. A splash of black paint gives a simple cammo effect too if you wish.

Personally I don't do the whole vest thing.

Never leave home without the hat though, and would never recommend people going out with nothing at all.

I always have an orange vest in the ute, for changing a tyre or hang off a deer or other game if I feel the need

Went deer hunting the other day in Vic state forest. There was another hunter heading out in the same area. We got to talking around the campfire the night before to strategize so we wouldn't hunt the exact same area. Anyway. We had a brief meeting in the dawn twilight. I was amazed at how well his blaze orange cap stood out from about 100m away with minimal daylight.

They do the trick.

You're a fool to wear complete green camp and no orange I reckon, in anything other than open fields at least. Definitely in denser bush.

I hear you.

I've gotta laugh though when I see blokes in the states going out in their full ghillie suits.

Those US deer are really on the ball there I guess

Red is OK too. Most animals see it as grey. Not sure about yellow though.

Is blue the new orange? I was in NZ this weekend and went into a hunting store in Ohakune. Had a chat with the guys there as i wanted to get an orange cap...

Apparently there has been a study done showing that in certain brighter lights the orange can look similar to red deer colourings?! It has led to a couple of accidental shootings according to them. Apparently now people are moving to wearing the blue instead.

Got the cap anyway as our bush is a different colour to theirs but certainly food for thought.....

Has anyone else heard of this?
