Any danger from wild dogs?

Post by veep » 28 Aug 2014, 1:34 pm

Hi guys,

One of the hunters. Are wild dogs potentially a danger to people/hunters while you're out for them?

I guess a solo dog will just flee, but if there is a back and they're feeling confident will they have a go at a person?

Anyone had a pack or a solo dog give them a go?

Yep and don't need a "pack", just a pair will have a go at ya. A solo dog will have a go at you too, just depends on the circumstances.

Your pet dog likes to lick your face but these ferals want to rip ya face off!

Me and a mate were stalked by a huge mob of feral dogs in a state forest behind the Bindabellas, I've never been more scared. There were more dogs than we had ammo. We bumped into national parks ranger who quized us on where we had been and where going, he told us that the dogs were taking down wild horses in the National Parks.

In if the mines I worked at in the northern goldfields of WA had packs roaming around, the odd one would come to the crib hut and chase someone. Best I ever got personally was chased up to the top of my water cart lol. They can and will take you down for a feed if your the easiest option available mate.

I've had one run in with them with a mate.

Won't post it all again, read the old topic here though.

When I worked at a farm just on the edge of the Tarra Bulga National Park (out of Yarram, Vic), we used to have to bring the horses down to the stable yards overnight because of the wild dogs. They'd practically wiped out the goat herd that the owner was apparently cultivating for the wool (Angora Goats), and it was only when the owner started having horses chased through fences, and a foal killed that he did something about it.

On about 220 acres, three guys (no idea who they were, but it was around 1993 or 1994) managed to shoot 17 dogs over 3 nights. Two weeks later, they came back and got another 4 dogs, but said there were plenty more out there. I left shortly after so don't know how it all ended.

I'd worry that, in that situation, my nerves would take over and I wouldn't be a good enough shot. I'm more likely to stay hiding in my tent or find a nice sturdy tree to climb lol but then, I'm chicken hehe

Dont blame you Jenna, When actually face to face with a pack, it becomes a whole different ballgame, and there is reason for the hairs to stand up on the back of your neck. If your in that situation and think your shot might not ring true, start carrying a shotgun :)

I'm leaving anything larger than a fox, to the experts, at least for the forseeable future.

I've experienced dogs in packs many times, and it was only due to training that made them as safe as is possible.

Still, I reckon going up a tree would suit me lol

only run in I've ever had was when a whippet looking thing bailed me up on a bush track early one morning on the way out to a fishing spot in forster on the mid north coast of NSW

I just yelled at it and it slowly slinked off into the bushes again

some of these other stories of big packs of dogs are a bit of a concern though! I have a 357 lever for that though! :D

I work in a remote mine site and we have packs of dogs that do attack if they sense fear, couple of people have been bitten.

Start shooting the extra ammo while dogs are distracted by eating spare mate?

I once had 3 dogs come at me in anger, 2 blue healers and a kelpie that were attacking lambs up the back paddock. They showed no fear towards me which I found both scary and surprising. Luckily I was able to retreat to the ute, drove back down to the house and grabbed my Mini 14 and 2 30 round mags. Dogs were still chewing on the lamb when I got back up there, I shot the 3 of them without hesitation. I wouldn't want to have come across them unarmed and on foot cause I'm sure the outcome would have been fatal for me. I was driving out near Cobar in 2011 during the night and lost count of the number of feral cats I saw, I'd never have believed the numbers if I hadn't seen it myself. Maybe the politicians should put a bounty on feral cats & dogs to encourage a more active approach to reducing the numbers.

Is that normal breeds for generations of feral dogs?

Or were they abandoned from a farm or something, now surviving on their own?

Not the kinds of dogs I expected.

Got bailed up by three cute fluffy lap dogs when I went for a walk once. :x
Ended up backing up for about a hundred meters before they went home. (was on a semi residential/rural road)
Wasn't particularly scared but I could see getting some bull**** animal cruelty charge if I had to beat them off.

I think these had run off from a farm and been living bush for a few years at least.

I identified them based on what they appeared to resemble most as none of them were purebreds.

One had a collar but no tags or identifiable writing on it.

A lot of Piggers lose dogs and well just can't be bothered finding them and voilà, the start of a feral dog!

Also other ferals will start out as a farm house dog and rouge!
