First blood x2!

Post by melanie » 25 Feb 2015, 7:58 am

Well I was pretty happy with myself yesterday.

Had a few hours on a new friends property for the first time and got myself a rabbit and fox :D

Nothing special to the seasoned hunters I know but pretty good first a first timer I say :)

Kinda on this topic but what do you do with the carcasses. I've seen in other post that you guys eat wild rabbits as we do here but what about the fox? In the states most hunt/trap fox to sell the carcass to a fur buyer. If you get a nice one in good winter fur a guy might have a mount made. I had a buddy that had one mounted curled in a ball like it was sleeping and kept it on his fire place ledge. Looked real as heck and small kids would pet it like it was alive. Another good mount is a small rug like a bear.

Sadly there is no real money in foxes here anymore, the state of Victoria gives a $10 bounty for the Scalps and there are some buyers out there that pay around the $10-$20 range depending on skin quality. In the old days when the fox skin trade was alive and healthy it wasn't uncommon to get $60+ for quality fox skins.

That's close to what has happened in the states. No one wears fur so the market is soft. A decent price is 30$ usd. I call coyotes and once in awhile a fox comes in. Unless it has been cold for some time like late December and I know the fox has prime fur I'll let him walk.

Back in the late 70's my buddy got 125$ for a huge prime fur red fox. Late January fur was so thick it made the critter look twice as bIg as it was. We were regularly selling coon for 20-30 bucks now 18 is top dollar for a big late season prime. If your not doing it for the fun of it no reason to do it.

A lot of rabbits are good for eating here. Not all, as we do have some diseases in our rabbit populations like Myxomatosis.

There's not much to be done with foxes. Even less in the past... The bounty is $10 now after being doubled a while ago, before that it was $5 a pelt. Wasn't worth the effort to collect and cash them in.

And you wouldn't eat one...

Nice work :)
I'm still to takeout my first blood.. my recent efforts were disappointing, up before the crack of dawn and not a single pest sighted on the trip, but was teased by a few bunnies on the side of the road on the way home. Nature is cruel sometimes.

It happens.

A while ago I went for a deer hunt and on a private property there was a big Red just wandering along, couldn't have missed him but obviously just kept on driving as we could take him.

A day and a half hunting on the trip after that and came home with nothing.

Ahhhhhh, Excuses Excuses

Still its refreshing to see that you've started out, and actually achieved, without so much as a list of melodramas and decision changes.
Hope all your future hunts and time spent on the forum are enjoyable.
