How to find goats

Post by rsj223 » 30 Apr 2015, 11:26 pm

One of the places I go bush has Goats and spot them every second or third visit, so what signs to look for do they favor a certain tree/shrub, where/how do they sleep and rest.

Like to bed down 3/4 of the way up a hill, gully and like rocky areas. During summer not too far fom water is a good area. Poo looks like small pellets. Eat anyting that is vegitation, trees, shrubs etc.

Just listen out for em, that's what usually gives em away. As someone said they like water and do seem to like bedding down up high overlooking the surrounding area.

Trotting along parallel to a stream when one is available is pretty common as I've seen it.

Yep you often see em down by creeks and rivers feeding, they aren't real hard to find generally (especially if you know they are common in the area) I often see them in some of the areas I used to hunt 30yrs ago, still see em when I'm up that way.

I usually just walk out the back and call them, but a crust of bread or an apple never goes astray :sarcasm:

One thing we found by joking around was that not only can you make goats call back if you make goat noises to make them easier to find in wooded country, but you can slow down their retreat when you open fire on a mob by calling out in goat language, true story

I don't know about for goats specifically but you can buy recorded deer calls in a megaphone type thing with different buttons to play different calls.

No reason it wouldn't work for goats?

Practice your calls or get some records on a hand held player or something.

very true works best with the kids  goats will go up when in danger/shot at so get the high ground, shoot the leaders, first two or three and the rest will mill about for a bit. scan the hillsides for them (a good look) they can be hard to see if they are not moving. under trees and bushes when its hot,the kids are easy to spot as they like to play. they leave a good track when there are a lot of them and are creatures of habit so will use the same track most of the time, until you start shooting them ;) water if its dry but they will change the time they come to it after you shoot a few. they will also walk past dead goats without a second look. let them get close and you can take out a fair few before they get out of range
