Crows cant see yellow

Post by Die Judicii » 30 May 2015, 11:29 pm

Hi all,
Recently I did a bit of research on crows, and read a very interesting article.
Apparently there was a big problem in Japan with crows ripping open rubbish bags at rubbish tips.
It was such a big problem that a particular business did quite extensive research into the crow.

They found out that the crow is colour blind to a particular shade of yellow.
Not just plain every day yellow, but a very particular shade of yellow.
They patented their findings, and wont share the particular shade with other companies.

However,,,,,,,,,

Plastic garbage bags made by the company in that particular shade of yellow are now used for the Japanese rubbish tips, with a huge reduction of the amount of bags being ripped open by the birds because they don't recognize / see the bags anymore due to that colour.

I notice that available here in Australia are rubbish bags made by "Multix" and are yellow.

I am thinking of wearing them like leggings, armlets, and vests, to see how they work against the crow eyesight.

Being garbage bags,,,,,,, could they be that "particular shade of yellow" ????? :unknown: :unknown:

If any of you members feel inclined to give it a go,,,,,,, I would be interested to know how things turn out.

( just don't let the little men in white coats see you )

I did some research myself and determined crows can't outrun a 12 gauge.

Just don't put those bags on your head ;)

I'm visualising a Banana's without Pyjamas hunting trip :D

Probably makes good sense to adopt this shade of camouflage if you're hunting crows. I wonder if this kind of research has been tested on other species though how would it work with animals that sense movement. Good pickup and curious if it will work so have a crack and let us know how you went :)

Ive heard crows can also differentiate between a rifle/shotgun and say a shovel. Maby just throw a bag over ya gun and see if they notice.
And if today is the day you call me home,
oh lord,
may I die in a pile of brass with the smell cordite lingering in the air

Might be quicker and easier to just hire a B1 or B2 outfit!

I look forward to hearing of the outcome of getting around in a yellow garbage bag! :D

I hear they like shiny things - was thinking of putting some aluminium foil on a fence line and see if that got them interested, or I could just use the fox pro with a crow call I spose.

Surely some colour/paint/ink company would have sampling machines that would take all off 2 seconds to match the exact colour.

Or so I'd think....

My mate and I both saw what the crow did, it definitely saw or heard the projectile coming (I think we were around 200m away roughly).

The buggers must have great eyes cause I've seen them dodge buckshot. Good to see that I'm no the only one that thinks Crows have some 6th sense to dodge lead. I'll see if they can dodge a .204 Ruger next time the opportunity presents :D

In a perfect world, isn't that where the "patent" takes over ?

Sure other companies may well have the technology to crack the exact shade,,,,, but the patent would prevent them from marketing it.
