fox hunting with 12g

I have a

T3 .308
12 akkar churchy 20" barrells
.22 lithgow crossover.

What would be your choice for fox whistling at night, i usually use the .308 but i want to use my shotty more. I have this misconception that you have to be within 30mtrs to kill something with a shotty ( hence why i dont use it much).

I dunno, its an awesome shotty and i want to put it to more use !

Choke, shells used and shot size will play a role in effective range.

For me I'd be looking at 3", BB shot and a full to extra full choke.

I've never used any of the SSG or slug loads but others may chime in.

Shooting what you have at different ranges against a sheet of old roofing iron might give you a feel for what may work.

Slugs may get better better accuracy and range from a longer barrel. Would a 20" barrel get much better range with slugs than BB with enough accuracy to make it worth while? I honestly don't know as I haven't actually tried slugs from a 20", only 28" and 30"

I'd stick with the 308 if you are spotlighting em - I use a shotgun on em when whistling in daylight but wouldn't really waste my time doing it when spotlighting (to restrictive distance wise) normally what I do when whistling em in daylight hours is have a rifle and shotgun with me (been caught out too many times now not to have a rifle with me for the ones who want to hang out further than the shottie can reach, I usually use BB's on em.

.22 or the shotty.

.308 is a loud, expensive way to fox hunt.

.308 is massive overkill if it's a regular thing.
