Hunting pest animals in north Vic

Post by tomnumurkah » 29 Feb 2016, 8:00 pm

Hi there guys

Got the first 6 guns and a my licence last week.

the only trouble is I live about 30 minutes North of shepparton and the closest state forest is Rushworth. its an hour away.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any unoccupied crown land closer that I could use a rifle on for hunting pest animals.

I have found the State Game Reserves but I am under the impression that rifles must not be used as hunting pest animals is prohibited in these locations.

If someone could help me out It would be great.

Thanks guys just really want to shoot a little more.

Hey mate I'm not really sure on game reserves but if you call in on some farmers and are respectful and polite maybe take them a beer and ask I'm sure you will find some properties to shoot on. All the best mate

You can't hunt pests in state game reserves.

You need a game licence to hunt deer.

Gday Tom, 6 guns in once....you're a champ,
Now, do you want to shoot pests or just shoot, and if a pest is shot its a bonus??! The odd plinknig session....is a lot of fun....

Up your way you have limitless places to shoot on, you need permission, obviously to hunt on the private land, and even target shooting, providing you comply with the simple rules, setup a back stop, minimum distance from houses and off you go....

You must know someone who has an acreage, enough to set up a 100m range??

Forest around there, not much I dont think....

Deer - if it is on private property then if its 'problem deer' the owner can control it (or invite / engage others to act as an agent) and therefore NO GAME LICENCE is required in VIC for DEER on PRIVATE land..... on top of which spotlighting is permissible

Rushy state has plenty of foxes along the property borders, specially along the north eastern boundry. There's also goats in there and the odd dog. It's really dry right now so check mud on the edges of the water points for sign and you might get lucky. One thing to be be aware are the various fauna parks and historic reserves within the state forest boundry so check the map.. and don't walk backwards as the place is littered with mine shafts and prospectors.

Have a good look at the map as there is also very small patches of state forest around northern Vic and the Strathbogies aren't that far a drive if you plan on spending the weekend in there.
