How to flesh a hide

Post by alan j » 02 Apr 2016, 8:58 pm

Hey men, any tips on fleshing a kangaroo hide before tanning. This is the first roo skin i want to tan but removing all the fat and thin meat layer seems very difficult. Thought someone may have some methods to make this job a bit easier. Thanks

G'day alan j,
The round knife and patience are still the best method for fleshing, but many people, myself included, use a pressure washer with a power head. Must be 3000psi or better, and a smidgin of care needs to be taken to avoid blowing holes, same as the knife. I have seen a couple of blokes use a 100mm angle grinder with a wire wheel, very quick but again you must be careful not to work an area too much so as to avoid holes, or going so deep you cut the back of the follicles and the hair falls off in spots, Cheers.

They also used bone, wood and trees for scraping. The hide was placed on the opposite side of a smooth-bark tree while holding it with both arms. A sawing motion, back and forth, being careful not to pull to hard, would effectively remove the fat and tissue.

If you wanna be smart,,, use the salt and alum method of tanning.

With this method you don't have to worry about getting all of the bits of fat/meat off.
It cures the meat and fat, which at the end of the process, is rubbed off with a 6" block of limestone.
Thus ending up with the tanned hide soft and pliable, and no bits left clinging to it.
Sort of killing two birds with one stone.

If you search my posts, you will find one where I have set out in great detail the step by step process including the mix ratio etc.

Me too... fleshing a steer hide on your own with a knife is just nasty!
